A New experience for me
« on: October 27, 2008, 08:54:00 PM »
How many of you guys have touched a deer while hunting? This evening's hunt, I was in an aspen grove and watched as a doe and a fawn approached in my direction. They kept coming until the doe stopped about 5 yards from me and started feeding. The fawn just kept on coming, and stopped on the other side of an aspen that I was standing beside. I reached out with the tip of my longbow and touched the fawn on his back. There was a look of 'oh crap' on his face, and he just about turned himself inside out getting away from me. Both of them left in a big hurry, but only went about 30 yards, and then looked back to try and figure out what had just scared them silly. I have hunted a lot of years, but this was a first for me. I was wearing camo, but I would have thought that at that distance, their noses would have given me away before I got to touch that deer. Quite a neat experience!

I missed the same experience by "... that much!" (best Don Adams/"Get Smart" imitation.)
I was bird hunting on the side of a smallish Maine Mountain, where several terraces descend to the valley like a giant's staircase. I was taking a break in the October sun, late in the morning, sitting on one of the 'steps' with shotgun across my lap, when I heard 'the rustle in the leaves that ISN'T a squirrel.'
I sat immobile, not daring to blink, as a young doe approached along the terrace where my feet were resting and came within a yard of me, moving a slow step at a time; uncertain of this strange lump sitting in her woods. At the moment of her closest approach I could have easily touched her with my hand.
Closed season, and she was too beautiful to kill. I blinked, and she started, jumping away to about 15 feet. Still unsure, she walked away slowly, continuously looking back as if in wonder of what had frightened her. I treasure the memory. For a while I knew what it was like to be the invisible man. (This was before blaze orange, and before camo. I was wearing green wool logger pants and a gray and blue plaid mack. I think I did have an orange hat, back then, but it was far more likely to be an old black French beret that I fancied at that time.)

Centaur,  I didn't touch him, but I had a similar experience saturday am.  I was in my ghillie suit, standing next to a trail, with a small blow down right to my north.  Earlier a 5 point had chased a doe past me and a spike followed up a couple minutes later.  Maybe 20 minutes later a nice 8 pointer,  I am guessing a 2.5 year old deer, was grunting north of me and as he approached, he shifted and came in right on the trail I was standing, nearly on.

He came in head down grunting behind me and I swiveled my head around as he closed.  I lost his head in my peripheral vision, behind my shoulder,  at about 3 feet from my butt.  He sensed or smelled something wrong and busted out, two leaps and stood there looking.  I turned slowly not knowing what he just did and saw him standing 10 yards away for a second and he ran after that.

He never knew I was there.

Earlier that day, as I was standing along a ditch that forms the south boundary of the marsh that I hunt, three Woodies did a fly-by that I felt (the wind)  they turned and came back, landing about 20 yards from me.  They they swam back right past me at about 4-5 feet and spooked about 20 seconds later when I swiveled to see them again.

That Ghillie suit really worked on saturday.

I was showign off when Connie and I were first married on a deer trip.  I watched a mule deer doe with twin fawns bed down by a big pine tree.  Using the wind, I stalked to the other side of the tree.  Looking I could see the hind quarter of one of the youngsters.  I reached around and put my hand on it's rear.  Things happened real fast and a foot hit the tree real hard about 6 inches from my head.  I'll never try that again.

Connie had a ruffed grouse land in her lap under a pine one year right at daylight.  There was blond hair and feathers going everywhere.  After two rounds it was declared a draw.  LOL

I was sitting on the ground with my back to a tree a number of deer walked by at differant yardages, then a doe and a button buck walked buy at about 5 yards and stoped about 10 yards away, the doe stomped a blew several times as the button buck walked up to me stopping several times to cock his head back and forth. When he lowered his head and touched his nose to me knee i made a small movement to scare him. Was not a good thing to do he went stright up in the air what looked like 5 feet above me, i thought he was going to come down on top of me.

Next was on Catalina island, they have blue buck there, some kind of exotic. I saw a blue buck doe feeding on a ridge, was not hunting them but wanted to see how close i could get. on my hands and knees got to about 10 yards then went to my belly, it was a lot smaller then, I got close enough and took an arrow and poked her in the butt with the nock. Had not learned my lesson had the same result as the botton buck above. Thought i was going to get stomped

i had a doe jump over the ground blind i was sitting in during the ma. shotgun season. she was being chased by a spike. ( that i shot about 30 secs later!!)
i also had a turkey step on the back of my leg while calling them in preseason! i was laying down next to a log because he gobbled right over the hill and thats all i had time to do. he walked right to the log, steped up on it, and proceded to hope on the "other log" that was laying next to it!!
ya wanna talk about a creepy feeling!!! those long toes and feet grabbing on ta your leg!! needless to say i jumped about 4 feet in the air, that bird is still prob. flying!!!!  :biglaugh:

Once I could have but I went "boo" instead.

It was buck season for rifle in Pennsylvania serveral years ago.  I was up in the allegeny national forrest near Dubois. I was sitting under over hanging pine tree limbs leaning against the trunk.
It was just turning light enough to see shapes.  Some deer came in.  I figured the one hanging on the outskirts was a buck but I had my unscoped 30-30 and no binoculars so I couldn't verify that it was a buck.  Buy the time it got light enough to tell it was a buck this doe and youngin' were right on top off me. I sat there motionless and this youngin' notice there was something there that wasn't looking like part of the tree trunk so it came to investigate.  It was putting it's nose right up towards my face trying to scent me. I didn't want it any closer so I said "boo".  But if I was quick enough I could have grabbed it by ear.  It jumped back, the mother snorted, and they all ran off. Might not have been a smart shot with an unscoped rifle anyway due to the distance but it was fun none the less. If don't get a deer with my bow I'll be using a scoped rifle for rifle season.

I was calling turkey's a few springs ago... A hen came in and walked in about 6 inches from me. Fun.
I've never tried to grab (lol) a deer. Have had a few "eyelash" close.

Great story, thanks for sharing.

Never touched one in the wild, but that is AWESOME. Had a Tom almost climb in a natural blind with me one spring when calling though. He came from straight behind me and I couldn't turn around. He got a yard away before he figured out something wasn't quite right.
