So I head into the woods this afternoon about 2pm and sit in a ladder stand on the edge of a reclaimed strip mine full of autumn olive, and a patch of woods full of beech, oaks, and hickory. It's almost 80 and the sun is hot and I'm feeling sleepy right a way. About 1/2 hour later, I'm nodding off and decide to climb down and take a nap ... Zzzzz .... Zzzz.
about 4 pm, I wake up, climb back up and think,"now this feels better!"
Almost right a way I see the rump end of a deer walking through the autumn olives, veering away. I give 2 quick grunts hoping to turn it around. immediatly, something big is coming towards me from a little below the first deer. All I can see is the scrub trees moving and my heart's going THUMP! THUMP! THUMP!!
My bows up, i'm ready as can be then everything stops and I can see a glittery eye in the brush. I'm thinking "just a little bit farther" then a head pokes through and the rest of the beast emerges from the scrub and enters the woods, broadside -- 7yds away, and i'm looking at the biggest, blackest COW I've ever seen in the woods!!!
That's right, i called in a 600# heifer with a grunt tube!!
That cow has no idea how lucky she is to still be alive!
And that was the excitement for my day!
