Hunting Partner got run over

Howzit all,

My friend Rich came into the office this morning around 10:30 visibly shaken. As soon as he saw me he said that he stared death in the eyes. First I laughed it off and asked him what he had done to his wife---again.

 He told me that he went bird hunting today up the mountain----(State Holiday). On his first walk, his short hair pointer locked up on a big bush. As he eased closer to the "bird" the "bird" didn't flush. Being the sporting guy that he is, Rich  picked up a rock and chucked it into the bush. Instead of a quail popping up, he heard a lound gunt and the bush started shaking. Before it registered, a large boar ran out and took him out. He was able to get a shot off but it went high and the next thing he knew, his body was hitting the ground and his shotgun sailing through the air. The boar flat out ran over him! He said that the bugga was one big one and all he remembers is seeing two beady eyes and ivories sticking out from his jaws.

He didn't look too bad but I took out the first aid kit anyways and patched him up. However---- going be sore when he takes a shower tonight.

 Then the ribbing began----- All in fun seeing that he was okay except for some scuffs, probably a huge bruise to his thigh and a bruised ego.

Could have been alot worse-----being alone and getting hooked and worked over---- real ugly. On top of that, his phone didn't have signal in the area that he was hunting so he wouldn't be able to call for help.

I wan't that pumped up this year for bird hunting "BUT" now I am! If things work our, I plan to go this Saturday with my bow and look for da big one that ran over Rich. Maybe the bugga will move back into the area after a few days. I going strap on my running sneaker jus incase. Will keep everone posted!

i avoided a touch up from an angry warthog few years ago when i was out with the pointers mainly thanks to the 44mag but hell it leaves you shaken.

When i was a child i saw a car that had been front charged by a hog defending its piglets while they were crossing a forest road.  Both total right offs, car and hog!  Would not want to get ran over by either.  Lucky escape for your friend!

Your story is eerily like our experience hunting bushpig earlier this year; my mate was 'run over' too. Knocked him cold for ten minutes and he still can't remember half an hour of his life! Has a neat pig print on his stomach now, kinda like a tattoo! Not funny at the time he was put in hospital for two days for bruising on the brain, luckily the ground was soft, damp sand with no rocks or stones.Lots of respect for pigs!

people that aren't scared of pigs need to get out of the treestands.

I always laugh when I hear people blow off pigs. I'd like to see how brave they are when one that weighs as much as them is growling and chopping ten yards away from them. When you're in a tree animals that can't climb aren't that scary. Get on the ground with them and you have a whole new outlook.

I agree with Swamp..a250 or so pound sow with pigs poppin her chops and blowin snot in your back pocket will keep you IN a tree for asure while it do!Seen one split a hog dog from plum to dontwanto in a split second and then tryed for my cousin.They aint pretty but they can sure be bad.

Never seen one in person but caught the Travel channel last night with that crazy guy that eats everything- yep he was on Maui chasing hogs.  Man those things are big and mean looking.  Glad your bud's mostly alright.

Howzit Brahdahs,

Thanks for the replies and concern over Rich. Called him last night to check up on him. Said he was sore and that the boar did get a piece of him. Apparently when he went to shower he noticed a tear in his pants and a small puncture wound to his thigh. Not enough to bleed through but just break the skin some. Lucky Buggah eh? Someone was watching over him big time!

Believe it or not, it is his second encounter with pigs in a matter of days. Saturday was the opening day of bird hunting here in the State of Hawaii. Late in the afternoon while running Scooby on a hillside (different area), he noticed Scooby hell bent for leather running down the hill towards him.  Rich saw that Scooby had something in his mouth----something that was screaming.----- Scooby had poached a piglet and hot on his heels was one pissed off mama! Half way down the hill the sow hooked Scooby and he rolled down the hill towards Rich. Surprisingly Scooby didn't drop the piglet and da bugga was still alive and screaming. Mama pig (about 100 lbs) stopped about twenty five yards from Rich trying to decide what to do. Rich fired two warning shots, grabbed Scooby and released the piglet. Piglet scampered off and don't know if it hooked up with mama. Rich didn't hang around to find out. He and Scooby backed out before mama changed her mind.

Man you should have seen the ribbing he got down at the Trap/Skeet range today. Don't know what hurt more, da scrapes and bruises or his ego. Me, I now call him "Palanka" instead of "Tatanka" cause he plays with pigs. Also today when he called for targets, I insisted that he oink----or grunt.

Yep, so called "friends" can be pretty brutal eh? Oh theres more----

Our plan this weekend is to send Rich out and stalk behind him. Hopefully his "friend" will come out to play. But then again, someone brought up the question, ---- would this be considered baiting and is it legal or sporting? I figure what da hell, should be good for a couple of laughs eh?

On Saturday, my friend and I plan to scout the area to look for sign and glass the area late in the afternoon. Don't think that we'll try anything unless it looks real good. Don't want to push him out of the area. Here mountain pigs like to follow a pattern unless pushed so we'll just sit tight on this one and hopefully get our chance next week Tuesday.
