Longbow Question
« on: November 06, 2008, 01:23:00 AM »
What would be a good choice. Speed not important. Looking more for stability & smoothness. Back-set, slight deflex- reflex, radical deflex-reflex, straight limb or string follow.

Dean Torges talked about the quietness, smoothness and stability of a sefbow with some set. Dr. Ashby likes a straight limbed longbow for the same reasons especially the quiet part. I've prefered longbows over recurves for quiet shots. Fox Archery made mine with slight r/d. I like it.

If speed is not an issue, I think most in the know will tell you the string follow longbow would be the smoothest and most forgiving.

I have to agree. I have 5 bows, 4 are reflex deflex except for my Howard Hill. It is by far the most quiet and smooth, but only with heavy arrows. That is currently the bow I hunt with and shoot daily, and honestly I don't see that changing. My bow is 70# and 68 inches long, and I shoot arrows in the neighborhood of 800 grains. It shoots 165-175fps. So if you are willing to sacrifice speed for stealth I say Hill Style.

I'm shooting (too light) aluminums out of my Hill and it's pretty danged quiet.  It felt a bit harsh at first, but then it's the first longbow I've ever really shot.  Now - smoooooooth (assuming no major operator error that is).

Try a Hill in the 68 inch lenght or more and you'll be amazed at the smooth pull.  Try a straigt handle and you never have to worry about torque.  You can shoot it with mittens on too.

I shoot a 68" Hill bow and it pulls smoothly and is also very quiet. I shoot the dished grip - the completely straight grip just isn't comfortable to me.
