Blacktail makes meat!
« on: November 11, 2008, 10:53:00 AM »
Guys, I just went on a fantastic hunt. I went to the Irvin Ranch in Coleman, TX. Bow hunting only and set up for it. Great stands and great deer. We arrived on Friday evening and hunted Sat morn and evening, Sun morn and eve and Mon morn.

He has 28 stands set up, 26 tree stands and 2 tripods. He has them set in great spots and does not over hunt them. Only has 8 hunts per year, 14 hunters each hunt and rotates stands so you do not hunt same side of ranch on two consecutive hunts. Draw system for whcih stand you get. All stands set up with wind in mind. Prevailing winds usually have you with at least a cross wind or in your face. All stands set up in good cover with numerous trails all around you. Oak trees of many species all over so no lack of food. Also feeds protien year round and has water at center of each pasture and central feeders in each pasture with stands set on trails leading to and from water and feed.

Very reasonable. He has had high success rates and 140 to 150 class deer. No size restriction on bucks and you can take a buck, doe and turkey. All for $400.00 for the 2 1/2 days of hunting. No high fence and big neighbors with very little hunting pressure.

Two trad hunters in camp and 12 wheelie hunters, but had some wanting a trad bow after shooting my Blacktail. LOL

Saturday morning we got to our stands well before first light. Mine was set up in a big live oak with good shooting lanes east and north and was masked behind with limbs and cover. Two well used trails to the east and one to the north.

At 6:30 I had two does and two yearlings come down the east trail and stopped to eat acorns at 15 yards. 5 min later, a big buck came in on the same trail. 10 points he came in to 20 yards, but hung back in the thick cover checking the wind. Never would give me a shot. I was shaking so bad one doe busted me and of course the game was up. Drats, you would have thought I was on my first hunt. LOL  Only saw one other doe and yearling coming down the north trail about 9:30, but no shot.  Got picked up at 11:00 and when we stopped for the next hunter, he had a 6 pt he thought down. I stayed and helped him blood trail while the owner picked the rest of the hunters up. Great blood trail and he went further than I thought. Turned out to be a two year old 11 point, but with the wierdest antlers I have ever seen. one side had 4 points 2" long growning off the base along with the three point main beam other side had one 4 " pt droping down off the base and a 2 1/2" pt on the other side and a 2 point main beam. Small basket rack configuration. Two other hunters took does one of them by the other trad hunter in camp. Everyone saw numerous deer and one guy stuck and 8 pt, but no vitals hit. No blood trail and arrow only had blood on from 1/4 of it. High shot. Another guy Shot over the back of a 150 class 11 point at 10 yrds.

More later. Sorry no pics, my camera died on me. I am trying to get the owner to send me all his so I can post them.

Sounds like fun...go get 'em! Your title says "..makes meat"...did you get one? You would have ended your hunt too soon with that 10pt.   :goldtooth:   Sounds like this is a well run setup and priced really reasonable for this type of hunt.

Saturday afternoon we got on stand at 3:00 pm. hot and a bit breezy. Not much activity all I saw were a couple of squirels, but still a great evening on stand. Out of the 14 of us only three had any activity. 5 nice bucks seen, but no shots taken.

Sunday morning was calm and very cool. Maybe this was the day. I liked the stand I drew. Again set up in a big live oak with three trails to the west of me and one south that comes right under my tree. At 7:00 am the wind picks up a little, but is crossing so not too much of a problem. Must have had my scent control working cause the little yearling spike that came in surprised me and came from the north right across where my scent was blowing and he never knew I was there. He ate around under me and in front at 10 yards for about 45 min and left. At 9:00 am I spotted a big doe on a trail about 60 yards in front of me, but she never came in and wouldn't you know it the biggest deer I have ever seen was 10 min behind her with his head to the ground right on her trail. I grunted, rattled, bleated till I was blue in the face. He never even looked up. 12 pts maybe more. Looked like some stickers on his offside. Probably a 170 or so and close to 225 lbs. For Tex, that is a huge deer. My heart dropped when I could not get him to respond.

About 15 min later a 8 and a 6 came down the same scent trail and kept on going also.

I heard a buck working the brush over in the draw to the left of me about 80 yards away, but he never showed.

Two does taken this morning with everyone seeing multiple deer and numerous bucks.

More later, gotta earn some money.

Went to the stand at 3:00 pm again on Sunday afternoon. Wind is howling, but my draw this time also has  a crossing wind. from left to right. Trail coming up out of a draw to my left in front, one coming in from the right in front, one coming from behind right under my tree and one coming in from the right over my right shoulder. Acorns dropping from my tree and the red oak in front of me. Tree rats every where. Wind finally dies down at 10 min to 6:00 pm. I heaqr something behind me and ease around and a doe is on a trail 18 yards out going right to left into the wind. She just keeps going slowly along, but no shot because it is thick back there. I turn around and a nice 8 pt is at ten yards eating acorns. Broadside and relaxed. I am not. I ease my bow up and draw. Everything looks perfect I release and know right away I messed up. Forgot to lean forward. Arrow sails 3 ft over his back, hits a rock, sparks fly, arrow breaks and he ass ends hisself getting out of there. I am disgusted with myself, what a dunce.

I calmed down and knocked another arrow. Fifteen min later a doe and yearling come from the right and stop in the same spot. I draw and release before I realize what I am doing. Took out both shoulders and bright yellow feltch burried with 140 grain Wasp sticking out the other. Blood spurtting. She stumbles and goes down right there. I could not believe it. Not blood trailing in the dark for me.

Blacktail now has some mojo. New arrow set up Grizzley Stik Woody 400 with bannana fletch. Badger Arrow made them for me and they are AWESOME. 29" bop. White dip with yellow and black crest. Chartruese Bannana feathers with white splice on the index. Great arrows.

I will post pics in a day or so as soon as I get them.

No website for the ranch, but I do have a number if anyone is interested. He says he is about half full for the December hunt and same for the January hunt.

He has spent 30 years getting this place like he wanted it.

How correct you are-  Since this was the infamous hunting trip that I had to cancel Bossier City for and it fell on the anniversary of when we met.  You are going to need to earn some money, cause it's gonna cost ya!  I am so glad you had a good time honey and I am glad you got to "make meat" with your blacktail, one question though.  I don't have to cook it do I?  I would be lost.... LOL oh and Donald be rest assured that if you don't put a HUGE Credit in my pay back account I may just have a few bows to sell on here.  You are gone 2 weeks at a time and you would none the wiser and I could plead ignorance.  LOL I am just kidding,  I would never do that.  I mean for goodness sakes I agreed to letting you have the BIG den for a man room and I actually brought up getting camo furniture in there... So your wife rocks today! Notice I said nothing about the Awesome house you are buying for us and giving me carte blanche for 80% of the house leaving you with the man room and yard, fair trade dontcha think?  :biglaugh:

Just wanted to say, I just talked to my Bubba and he and another Trad Archer really represented the Traditional side on this hunt. He and the other Trad shooter really showed there metal by only shooting mature deer while those other archers shot imature deer and missed a bunch. I know that happens(missing) but am proud that he was able to represent with such a fine shot on his doe. Way to go Bubba.
