ACS CX shooters: 14" vs 16" riser?
« on: November 29, 2008, 04:12:00 AM »
Hi all,

Whats the diffrence? Why would you go for the 16" riser over the 14"...less finger pinch maybe?

How would the longer riser affect performance?

Thanks!

Longer sight window i hope. Ive been thinking of going to a 16" in hopes of a longer sight window, i am on the verge of not being able to see the target. It is right at the top of the window and some times interfears with shooting.

Ill wait to hear what those who have tried both have to say

If you go to the web site the 16" riser looks to have a longer window. I have never noticed the problem with the short window even after you pointed it out.
I couldn't get my face into that position. Guess that's why you are a better shot pops!

I have both risers.  1st is a 14 inch aluminum riser.  2nd is a 16 inch Cocobolo Riser.  Vast difference in weight, although to be expected since it's comparing apples to oranges.  The shorter aluminum riser weighs substantially more, but that is a function of mass weight due to material and not due to length.

Sight picture is indeed larger on the 16 inch model, suits me better for my personal taste.  The larger sight picture seems to accommodate close in shooting a little better, but only if the bow is shot vertically.  A "cant" in your shooting form would cause an archer to not notice the difference in the size of the window.

The 16 inch riser makes a given set of limbs about 3 lbs lower in draw weight.  This is a significant issue that should be considered when ordering a new bow.  Factor in the extra riser length and the boys at A & H will accommodate your needs.

The 16 inch riser is a much better fit in my hand.  The custom grind that Larry and John have built in to the riser is just perfect for my large paw...

My 14 inch aluminum riser is clad in a Beaver Tail grip.  Beaver Tail makes an excellent grip material but I find on the 14 inch riser handle that the webbing between my thumb and index finger often gets cut by the feather fletching passing by on the shot.  Sounds a bit silly to say that the feathers are tickling the soft part of my hand but actually the fleshy part gets cut open occasionally.  Ouch!  I've not had this happen with the grind on the 16 inch riser.  The grind on the 16 inch riser (I've had two to sample) is just dead on correct for me personally.  Your results may vary...

I personally enjoy shooting 68 inch longbows.  The 16 inch riser affords me that option of 68 inches.  A 68 inch longbow is exactly the right height for me to rest binoculars upon the top limb to steady the glass while hunting.  A supported binocular gets used more by this bowhunter, particularly when winded from exertion...

Both good risers, fantastic customer service and quality product.  Selection depends upon your own personal preference....

Mike, the shelf on the 14' riser is cut as close as possible to the web of the hand to suit those folks who want the arrow on top of their hand.  I have reasonably large hands myself, so I add just a bit of skived leather under the shelf rest to raise the arrow up another 1/8".  That should prevent the contact between your large hand and the fletching.

I would say just like mike...I have 4 ACS bows, but only one with the 16" RC riser...At the beginning, with the 14" risers, I have got troubles with the little sight's window cause I shot vertically and was too very often blood hurted by the feathers...I changed the shelf, put leather grips and was not hurted any more...I learned to shoot with the bow bent and accomodate with the small sight's window so now I  can shoot even vertically without feeling bad...I bought too the 16" RC riser, it's a very, very comfortable riser but now I prefer my 14" ones..and especially the alu ones which, thanks to the adding weight, provide a great steadyness and a really zero shock feeling...I highly recommand the alu riser for people shooting heavy weights like me (75#@29) or fearing for hand, back or elbow shocks: with this riser, shooting become an absolute pleasure...I have owned more than 70 trad bows, all from the bests and never found a better for me than the ACS..

John, that's a good idea about the skived leather.  I'll give it a try cutting it oversized so it hangs over my fat meaty paw and pasting to the shelf...I should have thought of that sooner.  :knothead:
