The four strand string thread got me to thinking about string silencers and their placement on the string.I've been experimenting the last couple of days with where to place my silencers. I don't really like the fur silencers because I hunt in wet weather sometimes.I prefer catwhiskers but they seem to make a "swooshing" sound when the string goes forward on a bow even when I trim them but I've noticed that the closer the whiskers are to the limb tips, the less swoosh I get because the whiskers aren't moving as far as they would being located at the 1/4 to 1/3 points. So I moved my whiskers closer to the limb tips.....really close...5" from them. The bow is a 60"55# carbon/bamboo Copperhead longbow. After moving the whiskers this close to the limb tips,it was quiet but not really, really quiet. So I got to thinking...what if the whiskers were spread out more instead of being tied on the traditional way? So I took one whisker and cut it in half length ways and then I pulled the whisker apart and made three different pieces out of each half.I then untwisted my string a little and starting about 5" from the end of the string,I placed the 1st strip.About 1" from there I placed the 2nd strip and another 1" from there the other strip.I did this same thing on the opposite end of the string and then placed the string on the bow and strung it.I trimmed the ends of each strip the traditional way.I went out and shot the bow and I could not believe how quiet it was. It's the quietest the bow has ever been. So I proceeded to shoot about 50 arrows and it's still quiet and all I used was one cat whisker.I thought when I unstrung the bow all of the little whiskers would just fall out of the string but they didn't.My thinking was that by placing the whiskers closer to the limb tips means less "swoosh" and by spreading out the whisker over a broader area(about 3")actually cuts down on oscillation. If someone else feels inclined to try this please do.
