Bowhunting pheasants
« on: December 07, 2008, 07:12:00 PM »
I'll be heading out for pheasants for the first time later this week, and I was wondering if anybody has any tips.  In particular, what head should I use?  I would use broadheads or Magnus blunts with bleeders, but I'm afraid of the dog getting cut up when retrieving.  Any suggestions?  I have a Snaro point, a couple of Judos and Kondors, a couple of Magnus blunts, and various broadheads.

I use 160 grain Snuffers normally but not if there are dogs. Judo and Hex heads work OK over dogs.
The Snaro is junk.
Time is a great teacher, but unfortunately it kills all its pupils.

I've had Judos and Ace Hex Blunts bounce off roosters.  I have settled on a field point backed with a Zwickey Scorpio.  This keeps the arrow in the bird and the dogs bring them back dead or alive, safely.

Field point+scorpio, expect lots of near misses lead them more than you think you need to and don't get frustrated.
Just this Alaskan's opinion

No frustration here, I'm just happy to go.  I really don't expect anything but a good time and some great jokes.

Get them when they go to sleep in the trees. Me and my brother uses to hide under the trees and wait for them to come and roost at sun set, The poor thing dident now what was rustling around on the ground, but mum turned it in to a great Sunday roast. Big smiles on owe face that meal time.  :)

I had my bow stuck in some bush so grabed my brothers and his arrow fist time shooting his bow, and cained this one.Beacuse it was his arrow and bow, he felt it was his kill,  :)
And as you can see back in those days we spent alot of money on Camo  :)
