clear coat cracked on my Martin Venom?any thoughts?
« on: December 12, 2008, 08:26:00 PM »
i just picked up a Martin Venom 53#,barely used if ever  shot.I really was surprised by the performance of this longbow. It must be the Carbon in the limbs?
Anyhow,The clear coat finish on the riser,in the palm area is cracked in very fine ,almost spider web like cracks.i know it doesn't effect the bow as far as performance. Is this common to Martins?I've seen it on older Bear bows but not on a newer bow.I'm second owner so I don't think Martin would or even should do anything to fix it.Just wondring what might cause it.Any input is appreciated. Thanks

Doesn't hurt to call them. Or maybe the original owner can call them for you!!??

Have a Martin Dreamcatcher recurve. No problems with the clearcoat. May be due to temp , too cold? I agree with bentpole, give Martin a call. They are "good people" mostly. Last resort you could effect a repair yourself. I got some good "wood" knowledge from an excellent guitar repair shop. The guy restored many classic guitar's finish to better than original and they always have practical advice on wood/composite finishes and clearcoats. Hey it's worth a try.

There's no way I would attempt a repair myself before calling Martin first.

I bought a new hatfield that the store has had for about 3 years & the finish is cracked as you discribed on riser & limb tips. shoots to good to worry about though.

Never had the finish crack on any of the Martins, or howatts, that I've owned.  Give them call.  Never hurts to ask.
