52" AMO re curve
« on: March 07, 2007, 12:16:00 PM »
I have been considering buying a re curve I'm thinking about going short 52" my draw is 26.5 will i experience finger pinch (i shoot split fingers)
Will a short bow have no forgiveness compared to a 58" re curve I thought it would be good in a blind and i want to expand a little from my long bows and give something else a try.

I don't expect you'd have finger pinch issues.  I have a 60's Kodiak Mag (52" AM0) and similar draw length with no problems.  Is it going to be as stable as a 58" bow?  Not in my experience, they are more sensitive to form problems.

Design has more to do with sensitivity than actual length...most people say they are more sensitive to form problems right out of the gate...I've never really had any problems shooting short bows, long bows...like any other "will this bow fit" question, it cannot be answered here.  Your short draw shouldn't have a problem with any bow design, really.

How well it forgives your shooting style...only shooting can tell.  Denton is coming up, Sawmill, Whittingham...head to the big shoots, shoot what you can, decide from there.

After shooting short bows from blinds you will gladly accept any other issues people have with them.

I shoot a 54in Shrew Classic hunter with a draw length of 29 inches and I have no problem with finger pinch and I shoot 3 fingers under.  I agree with bjk & Pete W, it's all in the design of the bow and issues of a short bow are over rode by the benifits.  Well at least for me any how     :)

Stoneknife....I had a 52" Shakespeare at the bunny hunt. I know Im new...but I didnt even think about or consider finger pinch. I draw about 27 1/2". That was the bow I used to kill the baloon. If you are ever in the area(south of Shawn's 20 minutes) and wanna give it a run, let me know. Good luck with you hunt for your new bow!

58 inches is a short bow.  52 inches is a "really short" bow.  A 58-inch bow should be easy to shoot out of just about any blind.  I point this out only to suggest that you don't have to go to a really short bow to use a blind.  Either will work for you.  At your draw length, it's doubtful that you'll have trouble with finger pinch with the really short bow.

I shoot a 52" Checkmate Raven and a 54" Shrew Scout.  Niether one gives me any fits at my 28" draw.  It all depends on the make of the bow.  The more working limb the bow has the less angle the string takes and the farther the draw can be before pinching.

52" Cheyenne worked just fine for me this year out of a DB blind, Best buck so far for me. I'm sure this bow is one of the best shooting bows on the market today.

I have an AMO draw of around 27", and the 52" K-Mag feels great.

(Bob, will there be one of those short Cheyennes at Baltimore, around 47#?
Just idly wondering what my first take-down bow should be.)

I would go for it!!!!!

I picked up a 52" Checkmate Raven just before Christmas. I have easily shot a couple hundred arrows from it by now. I love it. It's one of the best shooting short bows I have ever shot. If you can get your hands on one give it a test drive.
I sure that you will be pleasantly supprised how well this short little bow performs.
I reckon so

I think it will be fine at your draw. I am shooting a 54" Arroyo now and it does not have any pinch out to 29"s. I wll say though that I myself and others may disagree but a shoter bow, no matter the design is more critical of proper from for me. I think this will help me in the long run as it will make me clean up my release. Shawn

Jim,
As I remember from the BH you're a longbow shooter, didn't even see you try out a recurve (ya should have tried the 52" Timberghost I had out there). IMO, the shorter longbows are slightly more critical of form errors than are recurves in general. I think recurve handle mass increases the stability factor, so there shouldn't be a huge change over issue. But as Shawn & the other guys noted, short recurves will let ya know when your form isn't right.
Re. finger pinch, I have 2 52inchers & I don't feel any pinch out to 29" either.

Brian was right on when he recommended that you get to a couple of the big shoots this spring & shoot as many as catch your eye. Also, if a couple guys go with you, you'll have a ball!
