stain or taper first..
« on: December 19, 2008, 09:29:00 PM »
Do you stain the shafts first and then taper or taper then stain? On the shafts I stained first it seemed like the taper tool was really hard to use. Does it matter if I stain under the nock and point?...Thanks Roy

I've always tapered first then stained. That way I don't worry about small unstained "rings" behind the point and in front of the nock.

I also dip my arrows to seal before putting on the points and nocks. I've never noticed any problems with glue holding. (Just don't use fletch-tite with gasket lacquer for the nocks. The hot melt, ferril-lite??, works fine.)

I taper-then stain. After I dip the shafts I run them through a tru-center tool and then on my disk sander to retaper to bare wood. Points seem to stay on better with the bare wood. Hap
