I love snow!!
« on: December 23, 2008, 11:43:00 AM »
We have had snow on the ground since about Thanksgiving.  I switched to hunting on the ground since the snow came and have had 8 deer within 10 yds of me and they never new I was there.  They have looked right at me and couldn't make me out.  Now I have to learn to be more alert when hunting this way.  I have been caught without a bow in my hand when they have come by.  Last night I had a nice doe at 3 yds and my bow was leaning against a branch!  It was -7 degrees so it was difficult to have the bow in your hand for very long.  Can't wait for tonight!  Winter isn't so bad after all.

Well hey, come on out here to CO and help me dig out! Another foot last night, atop 2', and still snowing hard. Again today I'll get little done but shovel, starting with the cabin roof. We have elk on the mountain and I have a cow tag ... but there's little joy and even less probability in bowhunting on snowshoes in 3' of powder. Moderation in all things, including snow! That's the ticket.  :coffee:  Dave

I'll send you all this white stuff.  We have 3'+ and are under a winter storm watch until Christmas with more expected until Saturday.
Plus we were only supposed to have a chance of flurries and it has been snowing all day.
However, when I was in IA, I always wanted a little snow this time of the season so I could see them better.
Next time I move, I think I will go where if they get snow, it makes national news.
I saw bambi too, I got over it.

I have heard of this thing called snow. I remember hearing stories of it from old timers who recall seeing white flakes falling during one Florida winter. In Florida, winter starts on January 15 at 4am and ends around 7am, 8am if it is a bad winter.

They are hungry and looking for food. The deer are suffering already in northern Michigan. Deep snow to start with, freezing rain 2 weeks ago making an icy crust and then snow every day since, with three and a half months to go. Ain't looking good.

Alligatordon -- Well, the deep powdery snow at least keeps my basketball sized FLA oranges nice and cool, which give me the energy to shovel all day every day. Variety is the spice!    Happy dave

I don't mind the snow too much, of course we rarely get dumped on to any degree.  Lately though, we've had a couple of ice storms, everything looks like it's encased in glass.  Very pretty to look at but downright dangerous to be out in.  Not to mention that it has stayed at zero or below for a couple of days.  Combine that with 20+ mph winds and it makes me just stay in the humble abode and check out the Tradgang...

Got my tocque, my 12 pounds of back-bacon, the Coleman lantern, my metric six pack of Bitter Woman IPA & a jug of Red Breast, a good woman and a warm dog, my Iversons, my old Atomic X-Country skiis, a steady compass, and my Quinn.

Bring it on, bring on the Great White North!

Merry Christmas to all of you

Not a problem for me, 72 degree's a little too warm.

Therin,

I don't know how I developed this idiosyncracy, but I hold my bow in hand ALL the time while hunting.  It's not as convenient as my buddy's way of hanging the bow until a deer comes into sight, but it keeps you ready for the "only 10 seconds from sight to shot" drill.  Two of the deer I killed this year wouldn't have been possible if I'd had to reach for a bow because of how and where they came in.

The coldest I've been out this year is 10 degrees, which is surely no minus 7, but I've done really well by keeping my core warm and slipping a footwarmer pouch under the back of my fleece glove on my bow hand.

I've seen three benefits.  I'm ready.... I can use the bow as a mini "blind" between me and the approaching deer (it's amazing how it seems to help break up the outline)... and I "practice draw" from time to time to keep warm and keep confidence high.

Drawing hand is in my pocket if it's cold, but bow is in hand across my lap.  Males me feel like I'm ready and "on duty!"

It's all worth it when the snow turns red!!

Good luck in your hunts!

Dave, I would think an orange looks nice in snow, however unnatural it may appear. (Remember to slice those into wedges-they're not fun to peel.)

I will confess to hunting in snow on two trips, loving it and killing bucks each time. Blood on snow is such a pretty sight! I do envy you folks who have a nice change of seasons. If I wasn't such a prisoner of my life in Fla I'd head north and surround myself with aspens instead of palms. Someday...
