TG'rs in NM
« on: December 29, 2008, 02:30:00 PM »
I'm going to be at White Sands Missile Range from March thru mid May, and am planning on bringing my bow.  I'll be free most weekends and was wondering if there is the opportunity for shoots or maybe even some hunting.

If you have any ideas or suggestions I would appreciate it.  last time I was in NM was when in the Boy Scouts and we went to Philmont up north.

Thanks

Nick
You will be here during turkey season which normally runs from April 15-May 10.  There are lots of birds in the Sacremento Mountains.  If you are living at White Sands it will be about an hour drive.

I actully have an oryx tag on White Sands Missle Range for March.  You may have heard about our local oryx herd.  You will see many of them if you spend any time on the range.  They live from the Texas line to about 100 miles North, mosly in the Tularosa Basin, but also on the Rio Grande side of the San Andreas Mountains.

March is kind of the end of the coyote season, although you can hunt them year around.  We have lots of coyotes, if you can just find a day in March when it is not windy.

As far as shoots go I am out of the loop anymore.  We use to have many local shoots all spring and summer, but that was 10 years ago.  It would not be hard to find out if there are any shoots going on.

I think you will find it to be an interesting area.

I'm just 30 minutes away from the Philmont Scout Ranch.
I'd be glad to show you around the area.

Thanks guys, I will be attending a class there and staying in Las Cruces.  I was looking at maybe trying some javelinas in TX also while I'm there.

Definately interested in chasing some birds while I'm there.

Patrick,
I used to be stationed down there.  Traded the hot desert of 'Cruces for the milder climate of Raton.
If you ever cruise up I-25 to this part of the state, you can find me at the NMSP office in Raton, or send me an email and let me know if you're headed up north... if it's during turkey season, I'll take you out to chase some birds.

Guys, I do appreciate the info and I don't mind driving so I may make a road trip up north or wherever.  Hate sitting around with nothing to do on the weekend.  I'll drop you guys a line as things get closer.
