Hybrid Longbow

I have been looking for a new bow and was fairly set on a recurve until I recently shot a hybrid longbow and it was the smoothest I had shot and grouped the best.  The longbow is a 3 piece takedown with a riser that is more similar in mass and center cut to a recurve than a longbow.  Anyway I have always heard that longbows are harder to shoot and much less efficient than a recurve.  Are these myths true in regaurds to the new hybrid longbows?  Would I be better off purchasing a recurve or hybrid longbow for my initial entry into traditional archery?

Hybrids bring the best of both styles together in one bow. Your partiality to recurves is likely based on grip styles. Add in the leverage of a working reflexed tip, while maintaining the pointability and stability of a longbow and...well, I like 'em too!

I grew up with recurves, have a bit of trouble with low grips. The compromise works for me.

If it was smoothest and shot the best, you just busted the myth. Hybrids are closer to recurves in terms of performance (some outperform recurves). As you can see from my signature, I prefer longbows. They are quieter and I think they are more forgiving than recurves. My Kanatis flat smoke an arrow. I would put them up against any recurve of the same draw weight.

Jason Kendall (jkbows.com) is working on a three piece that should be the cat's meow if you are willing to wait for a custom. His one piece bows give the best bang for the buck I have found. I keep trying other bows, but haven't found one that comes close to a Kanati yet. It's also cool that Jason is from Forest City, IA. He's just 25 miles from me...maybe that's not a good thing   :rolleyes:  .

The bottom line is, shoot what you like. The performance is not that much of an issue. Longbows are quieter and quiet kills.

I've been shooting recurves 4 the past 13 years.I recently got my first longbow limb hybrid.Hands down the fastest bow I've shot and very quiet.Draws and shoots very smooth also.Best of all worlds?Well, this particular bow is more sensative to shooting form than my recurves.I guess there is some trade offs.
