If you can get lucky enough to draw area 87, you would have a great time. Lots of public land and lots of deer. You have to shoot a 4 point or better, but they are there. Western Wyoming; the areas around Dubois have lots of deer. I live near the Bighorns, and there are some good deer areas as well, but public land isn't as good as private ground, and the ranchers will want access fees. Mulies are statewide, but you will find more whitetails in the Black Hills area, so if you want mulies specifically, try some other places. I almost forgot about the Shirley Basin region; lots of deer and lots of public access. Good luck!

I live in the Shirley Basin area. The deer herd is hurting. I've been hunting the Shirleys for 8 years and have watched the deer decline. I am now a part of bringing the deer back with a bunch of coyote control. We, the USDA, will be hammering coyotes for the next three years in area 70.

The walk in hunter management areas in this area do not allow any deer hunting. The ranchers even realize there is a problem.

I would head down towards the Baggs area. Better public access and some dandy deer in that country.

PM me if you have any other questions.

OH...MY....Sounds to me like Shirley Basin area is about in the same shape we're in the western part of the state. You got the same Management Team we use? Our Canine problems are Much Larger Size wise    :scared:      :scared:

Region H is not a #1 choice, Lots of public land good access....Hard Draw....POOR Heard management and THE BIG DOGS LIVE HERE!!! Baggs or if Pat has enough time the Bighorns would be my inclination.......

I lived in Eastern MT for about thirty years and am very familiar with the Gillette area I do not know the specifics about public land but I know the deer herd, numbers wise have always been very strong.  And I have seen some really nice 170 to 180 inch bucks in and around that area.  Might be worth a look or maybe someone else will chime in from that area.  Good luck
Luck has nothing to do with it, just Boot leather and a GWP.

You can wipe off all the wilderness areas since you can't hunt wilderness without a guide.

The far southwest corner of the state may be worth a look.  I know there are 1 or 2 areas that may be draw, but the rest should be general, not sure the region.  Pinion/Juniper type country with good BLM access, check out the Cedar Mountain area.  Vance's area is great if you want a true high country experience.  Numbers aren't great though, you can look at a lot of country and not see many deer.  But, when you see one it could be...

I still miss Wyoming,

Nathan

Sounds like Shirley Basin has changed a bit in the last few years. Sorry to hear that. It used to hold some good deer populations  and some big guys. Is Ferris down, as well? That was my favorite hunting area when I lived in Casper.

Hunted mulies few years back in Wind river basin, just outside of Worland in the 16 mile creek system. Lots of decent deer and you can hunt out of hotel no problem, area 5 mins from town. Not sure of area # as don't have regs at work.
