White Bison Longbow!
« on: January 09, 2009, 04:07:00 AM »
Since ive hardly received any feedback in the History forum, I figured I would post this here in hopes of some quick replies.. Can anyone give me any info about this bow? White Bison Longbow. Bow is 64" and is 54# @ 29". All Honey Locust with a locater grip. Has a 450 string. Is this a good bow? Will it make for a good hunter? Whats it worth? Thanks!!!    http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd52/Meister649/longbow.jpg

Do a search for Wary Buck. He is a member and has some of these bows. Read about them in his book.

Also search Steve H., I believe he used to make them but Wary Buck can give you more info on them.

I would email them if it is in their profiles as they do not frequent TG that often.

Hope this helps.

I would resize your pic as well or it will get deleted.

It would be a great hunting bow.

I would most definitely hunt with that bow. Looks like a critter killer to me.
Just one more step please!

Steve Hohensee, a Blair, NE native, then moved to MO, and has been in AK for a good number of years lately, is the bowyer of the White Bisons.  He has been married a year or two, and is a geologist out of Moose Pass, AK now.  I think he is hunting in HI at this moment.

Anyway, I'm no expert on Steve's bows, but I do own two and they are very sweet.  Several of the chapters in my book discussed hunts where I spilt blood with the White Bison.  He had a loyal following but you have to earn a living, and quite frankly I don't know how any of you quality bowyers can do it on that alone.  Folks complain about the costs of custom bows, yet don't realize the hours of blood, sweat and toil that go into these works of art.  So Steve quit bowmaking as commercial venture, which is a loss to us.

Back to the White Bison.  I'm a hunter, and not a bow expert by any means.  But I know the White Bison was very well-received and he made them in a variety of different woods and other features.  I only own four hunting weight bows:  a Pronghorn takedown longbow, a Schafer silvertip recurve, and two White Bison.

I almost bought a White Bison made by Steve H. at the Gun Shop in Olathe Ks. several years ago. The owners had lots of used and new Trad bows for sale there. To this day I still kick Myself for not buying it.

If Steve ever starts building them again I'll be at the front of the line!! ( hint, hint )

Steve H is a member of this site...  Sure wish I could get a custom one from him but still a no go...cough cough.

Steve was building again...atleast to some degree.

in a side note...Steve if you see this, tried calling on my way back north from fishing and stopped by what I thought was the old house...got lost in the rainy darkness of the big sitka spruce and gave up.  Hope the Mrs's is doing good..stay in touch.  My email [email protected] and cell are all I have anymore for contacts.

Jerad,

Hope you like it ok.  Yes, I built the thing!  Try a brace height around 6 5/8" to 6 3/4" as a starting point.  It almost sounds like one I built for Don Miller, not sure how I remembered that tidbit!

Danny,  we just got a new phone number today, will e-mail you.  Life has been hectic with our recent move!

Oh, and BTW, I have maybe averaged 2 per year since I moved to Alaska, 8 years ago.  Has just been for myself, family, and helping friends make one for themselves.  I was able to quick knock out two before I moved in lighter weights for my tired old body.  One has spilled blood on five larger critters since November, ready to try and blood the other newby soon.  Bryce has the really deadly ones thou....how'd that happen?!

Own a White Bison myself, and it's spilt some blood too!  It'll never be for sale.

Hey Stevo,

[email protected] is my only email anymore.  Live in north pole, you can figure the rest out.  My cell is 907-322-0397 or work 377-1270 (winters).

Looked up the moose pass number and no answer this weekend...you out chasing something interesting eh?

Danny,

I suspected.  The number was only good as of Monday.  No cell coverage here.
