all new to me
« on: January 12, 2009, 11:25:00 AM »
I don't know exactly where to post this, but this seems like the busiest place. Please move if needed.
I am completely new to traditional bow hunting. I was going to buy a bow, but after looking at everything, I realized I couldn’t afford to buy a bow and all the other things needed to get started. I decided I would borrow a Bear model Black bear 60” 45@28” from my uncle to learn. That is the only thing I have; the bow with a new string, silencers, and bear hair rest. I don’t know what my draw is, but I think it is between 26” and 28”. I don’t know what kind of arrows to buy to get started with. I don’t know what tips/heads I should use with the arrows. I don’t know if I should buy a glove or a tab or both. I don’t have a quiver or know which kind to get. I am on a fairly tight budget, but I don’t need fancy things. Any advice on what I should be looking to buy would be great. Advice on how to get started correctly would be appreciated. Any information, tips, or advice would be great. If you would like to send me pictures of a product, my email address is [email protected]. I have noticed that some people do not upload pictures online. If you would like to send pictures my way, you can ship them to 24120 S 230 Rd, Okmulgee, OK 74447
Thanks

If you have a Black Bear to use, you have a great starter bow. Use it as long as you can, then buy it if he'll sell. Mine is old and ugly, but still outshoots all buy my custom Kanati's for accuracy. My daughter's is even better looking and shooting. They are also very quiet for recurves and have no finger pinch or stack to at least 28". They aren't real picky on arrows either since they are cut to center. Not the fastest bow around, but speed is overrated anyway. They are deadly accurate at 15-20 yards, which is where  you want to be anyway. You won't be disappointed in this bow at all!

If you want to shoot aluminum arrows, 1916's would work great from your Black Bear. I'd put 125 grain field points on them and practice until you think you are ready to hunt, then put some 125 grain Wenzel Woodsman broadheads on and go hunting.

If you want to shoot carbons, Gold Tips are probably your best bet on a budget. Check out Sipsey River (a sponsor here) they often have blems for a good price. GT's are relatively inexpensive carbons even at full price. Sipsey River also has Vapor 2000 for about $35 a dozen (shafts). These would also work in your bow but you'd have to fletch them yourself.

Glove or tab is a personal choice. I have a Duraglove from 3Rivers and would recommend it highly. They are relatively inexpensive and wear like iron. They also give a nice release.
I also use a tab. I have tried several, but the one I like best is the Screaming Eagle tab. It is cordovan leather, which is nearly impossible to wear out. I got mine from Grandpa (tradgang handle). Look in the sponsor classifieds or shoot him an email ( [email protected] ) to see if he still has them. He was charging $10 shipped which is a super deal on a great tab.

That should get you started. Welcome aboard. You found the right place to start your addiction...um...hobby.

Do you have any arrows right now? you could nock an arrow draw it back and have some one mark the arrow at the front of the bow. This will give you an idea of your draw length and how long of an arrow you'll need(minimum length but arows can be longer).Maybe look for some 1916 aluminum with 125 gr. points. As for quivers are you planning to hunt with it or mainly do some target shooting, for hunting a Thunderhorn Boa or Selway or Great Northern have some  good bow quivers or maybe a hip quiver. For target shoooting some like back quivers or hip quivers too.Tab or glove,it's a matter of personal preference I like a tab but you may like something different, try both of them.If you plan to hunt any good 2 blade head 125 grs.,like a Zwickey or a Magnus work good.Use field points for target shooting and maybe get a couple of judo points for stump shooting.Your bow measure your brace height, the distance from the deepest part of the grip to the string, should be around 7&1/2" to 8",get a bow square to set your nock height usally around 3/8" to 5/8" above square. These suggestions will help you get started.

I bought a Black bear a few months ago and it quickly became my favorite.  It's a good bow and I can pop 6" balloons with it at 25 yards.

The quickest way to determine your draw leangth by yourself is to put a clothes pin on an arrow shaft and line it up so it is in front of the bow.  Draw and the clothes pin will slide down the shaft.  Do this a few times and measure the results for an average.

My draw is just a hair under 28" and I'm shooting 50 pounds so my arrows are easton 2016s cut to 29.5".  With a 125gr field tip they fly great.

My broadheads are 125gr Magnus 2 blades.  They don't cost alot and do a fine job.

Glove or tab, personal choice.  I prefer a glove Mine is a $8 Allen model that can be bought in most sporting goods stores.  I know it isn't one of the more expensive models but it has held up for about 10 years and it works fine for me.

I like a tube hip quiver for practice and a Boa strap on quiver for hunting.

You came to the right place to start out! Lot of good info and advice on this site.

Looks like you live in a pretty good area to learn. One of the best archery retailers in the state is in Okmulgee, though they don't carry a lot of trad suff, I know the owner shoots trad and those "other things". plus the local bowhunting club there has many members that shoot trad.
Might take some time along with trial & error to figure out what works best for you. Enjoy!

Some help is in the mail   :)   . I sent you one each of these.1816, 1916, 2016 and 2018. They are full length with new feathers. This way you can cut them down to try and dont have to spend the money on something you dont need....Roy

I took some of the advice for measuring my draw length. I marked an arrow at 26"-29" and I put a clothes pin on the arrow to combine the two methods. I averaged around a 27" draw, but I still have not started shooting. My plan is to use the arrows blind one is sending me to start practicing as soon as they arrive. (I really appreciate the arrows by the way.) I think I will take pictures/videos when I do start shooting to get advice. I want to try to avoid developing any bad habits. Should I start a post on the shooter's forum when I do that?
Thanks again for all the advice.
