Ol' Dan at the top!

That's the way I remember Dan....that big smile! He was opinionated, but aren't most of us? But he always had a smile and a handshake for you.

He was a great ambassador for bowhunting with traditional equipment and he will be missed.

Good hunting, Dan!

Some things, and people, you wish would go on forever.

Killdeer
Long, long afterward, in an oak I found the arrow, still unbroke;
And the song, from beginning to end, I found again in the heart of a friend.

Anyone have the info on the bear? I remember reading about the hunt in the old "Western Bowhunter" but the only details I remember was; from the ground, less than 20 yards. Who's got the details.

I dug out an old article that i had saved and these are some of the details
The bow was a 69#archery traditions Red Elm Hunter
arrow was a 30"(32" overall)superceeder with a 160 gr delta snuffer 3 blade
The first arrow drove the snuffer out the oppisite side of the bear, second arrowcut the front paw
the hide sqd at eight and a half ft and the skull green scored  22 15/16"
The article I have was wrote before an official score was given
If anyone wants more detials I will gladly mail them a copy of the article
If it wasn't for Hillary Blackburn I may have never found my way to the woods and the water.I miss you Puppy.Love from your grandson.

Back in  1999, I hunted with the outfitter( Al Gilliam)in southeast Alaska who guided  Dan  on his brown bear hunt.During the hunt he took me to the spot where Dan  shot his bear.Definitely tight, scarry quarters, Dan had a hard time getting to the area due to a bad foot.Al said he was one of the toughest hunters he ever met.I would have hunted right there too but the salmon weren't there. Wish I took  pictures.

Al was right, not just one of the toughest hunters, he was one of the toughest MEN you'll ever meet---lived much of his later life in near constant pain without complaint or letup, lived through things that have killed off lesser men, hunted hurt on more than one occassion---what some of you fellas in the north might know as a "red ice player"

interestingly, almost all of us remember him for his toughness, his tenacity, and yes, at times, his stubbornness---what is seldom mentioned is his intelligence, his grasp of bow and arrow physics, his quick mind and his ability to find practical applications for the science of archery.

Spoke with him many times, was a dealer for his bows. A true archery Icon not only in his state of Georgia but across this country.

What Dan has done for archery, promoting the sport, fighting for laws and privelages, his expertise with equipment, his name should right along side Hill, Bear and Pearson.
