I lived in North Pole for 15 yrs. Left in Nov. 03

You can hunt off the Haul Rd.  But, It can be crowded.  If you can get off the Rd, aleast a mile you will do a lot better.  I only did this a few times.  I also hunted the 40 mile herd in Chicken AK near the AK Yukon boarder.  I always did good there.  You will need a 4 wheeler to get back about 15 miles.

It can be done. One day there is a lot of caribou and the next they can be gone. I think the season starts in July and runs until April. It is a long way from any services so go prepared.

Look in the hunting forums here. They discuss the Haul Rd. and give times they are seeing caribou.

Badger,
I was in North Pole the same time '90-'91.  Worked at the refinery.  Never hunted though.  Worked until work was gone and then left.

I lived there from 1976 to 1986.  Mostly in King Salmon on the Alleutian Peninsula.

Moose and Caribou hunting was great, but being local I could take advantage of good weather and herd movment.  It was very tough bow hunting because most of the shots I got were 100 yds or more.  I took 1 moose at 25 yds and 1 Caribou at 15, but I was packing the .338 Mag both times.

Bow hunting can be done, but the success ratio is far from 100%.  For every neat article you see in the bow or hunting magazines, there were probably 20 or more went home empty.

Also the hunting is not near as good as it was 20 years ago.
