Quiver plans
« on: January 22, 2009, 12:28:00 PM »
anyone know of a place to see different quiver plans, blueprints?

My grandad was a woodworking, knife making, leatherman and left me all of his tools. I would love to continue this family tradition, I just need a kick off to get started.

Anyone recommend some books on learning to tan and prepare leather?

You are very lucky to have received your Grandfather's tools.  What a treasure!  It's great that you are able to follow in his footsteps.

I make patterns with cardboard or poster board. Think of what you want to make, draw it on the posted board, cut it out and staple it together and see if it works. If not take it apart and add or remove material and put it back together. Once you have the pattern worked out draw it out on the leather and cut it out. I use a utility knife to cut leather.
When working with a hide remember it stretches more across the hide than lengthwise so cut out pieces accordingly. The center of the back of the hide is the strongest part and along the belly is the least strong but it is softer.
You are fortunate to have your Granddad's tools. He will be with you as you work.

You can start with the diagram in chapter 7 of Saxton Pope's    Hunting with the Bow and Arrow.  From there, it is not too hard to extrapolate your own ideas. Pat B has the better tip, though.

I typed up some instructions on how to make a few types of plains-style quivers.  If you're interested I can email it to you.
