light broadhead options
« on: January 23, 2009, 01:01:00 AM »
I picked up one of Bob Sarrels stock bows last weekend and am trying to get it set up.  I normally shoot 50-55 pounds at my 29.5 inch draw, but wanted to try something lighter. It is his bobbcatt model recurve with all actionboo limbs and scales [email protected]. I originally bought it to work on my form and goof around with, but I shoot it so well I would like to hunt with it. I am shooting blackhawk vapor 2000s full length with a 100 grain brass insert and was counting on shooting 145 grain heads, but they bareshaft pretty weak. I screwed on a 100 grain field point and got perfect flight and was acceptably weak with 125s. Now I am looking for good broadheads in 100 or 125 grain. What is anyones opinion on a 2 or 4 blade for this light draw weight bow for deer and pigs? I was thinking magnus stingers, regular screw in 2 blade magnus or muzzy phantoms. What are your thoughts?

Any of the coices you sid will work great. I would also add the Eastman first cut. the are very similar to silver flames and they are very close in quality. I have both and tested them both. They are a 2 blade with 2 small bleeders up front and they are about $20 a 3 pack

Razpr caps come in 100 gn. Also If your shafts are full lenghth and provided you have room, you could cut them off until the 150's shoot. Or even heavier head. this would give you a heavier FOC. Just a thought. Don

I appreciate the input guys. The shafts are full length at 30.5" and when I draw properly using Terry's clock, I push 30+ inches of draw, so I can't really cut it down. The first cut looks interesting Skip. Do the bleeders that far forward reduce penetration?
I am mostly concerned with getting good penetration at the lower draw weight. I guess the real question is are bleeders on any broadhead going to cause issues with penetration at only 43 pounds? I would like to shoot a 4 blade for the added bloodtrail, but do not want to give up much penetration.
Also, what kind of bloodtrails are you guys getting with the regular 2 blade 1 3/16 screw in magnus?

I've been using Stinger 125s on my lighter weight bows.  I'm gonna try the 125 grain 4 blades this year.  The bleeders are really small on them and I doubt they'll interfere much with penetration (my bows are heavier than yours though 53#@30").  I think the 2 blade stingers would work great for you, they are available in 100 grain as well...Mike

I had a great bloodtrail with the eastman. i can't say about penetration for sure because i was using my wheel bow. i do know they are sharp and penetrate into the target at least as far as the stinger with bleeders.

I used a 2 blade magnus on a doe this year and had just a few drops of blood over the 30yds she ran and this was in the snow. passed through the top of her heart with a low exit too

This is how the eastman performed, the photos of the one above are just after i washed them off, after going through this doe

The deer never reacted to the shot. it just stood there with blood pouring out of the chest, mouth and nose for a few seconds. She took a few steps forward and fell over stone dead.

From the begining to the end of the bloodtrail

Skip---can you take that bleeder blade out and just shoot it as a 2blade or will it affect flight or have extra noise?

One of the guys who did the flight testing said it flew great without the bleeders. the heads are kinda loud either way, like the SF's.......at least i higher speeds. I have no shot them as a 2 blade and i don't know what they'd weigh

Everybodies wanting you to spend money..Build out your side plate until your 145's shoot well, then go hunting!  :)  You can adjust the bow to the arrows instead of the other way around.......O.L.
