Arrow question/String Question
« on: January 23, 2009, 11:13:00 PM »
I've been wrapping up my first solo layed up bow.. oak and maple stack ... got the wax on it and it's busy tonight stretching it's new string.   And, yes, I will be posting the required pix tomorrow.   However, I hit a couple of question points.

this is a light bow, 28@25 and for it I fletched up my first batch of 1516 Eastons.  Previously, I had done a lot of shooting with 1616's and managed to squeak helical fletching onto them.   On these even skinnier shafts, I went to my first ever straight fletching.  My helical clamp just didn't want to accommodate that skinny a curved surface.  I set my JoJan up for what I felt was the most angle I could get and used the straight clamp, but, man, it doesn't seem like much!  They seem to fly well in testing, but my question is, "How much angle is considered good or ok on a light arrow (these weigh 240 gr with nib points).   If anyone has some experience shooting light with straight fletching, I'd love to hear some observations about it.

In making up the string for this bow, which is named "Slowpoke", I went for a lighter string than I have made previously, 10 strands of B50 instead of my usual 12.  I know that when I serve it in the morning, it is going to be loose on the nock.  Obviously, I can then pad the string with dental floss or even double serve it, though I think that would make it too thick.   Anyway, I was wondering about the possibility of serving with B50... is it done?  Are there good reasons not to?

Dick, before you serve the string, lay some pieces of B50 in nock area and wax them well into place.  Use however many pieces you figure you need to get a good nock fit and then serve over them.  I've done this in the past and it works quite well.  I have my doubts that B50 would hold up well as a serving.

Dick I shoot 12 strand B50 strings on 60lb bows without any issues.  I would think you could drop it down even further to 8 or even 6 if you wanted at that weight and just pad the loops up to a 12. That'll give you a bit more performance. Double serve just the area where you place your fingers and you'll be fine. Serving with B50 will not last.  It will stretch and come loose.

What kinda of nocks are you using  on your arrows? I made up some 1514 arrows for my neighor's daughter and those arrows used G-nocks.So I used the small groove G-nocks.088,the string I made was an endless 8 strand B50 with No.62 .025 serving and those nocks fit good.8 strands was overkill for her lightweight bow,but I just made it 8 strands with .025 serving for nock fit.All I could get was pretty much a straight fletch on them when I made them up.

My wife shoots .780 and 1000 deflection carbons out of two different bows. She shoots 3" feathers straight fletched with just a slight off set.If the arrow is spined properly, and since you aren't shooting broadheads you should have no problems with whatever feather set up you choose. My wife uses 3" feathers to give her light arrow a little flatter trajectory.
