POC questions

1) Shooting a sinew/rawhide backed, reflexed osage bow(Owl bow) 55-60@27" and wanting to use 160 grains up front, what spine would you recommend?  My arrows range from 28-30, I try to stay on the shorter end of that if possible.  

2) Who is your current favorite supplier?

3)  Around what total weight will I get with self nocked POC at around 28-29 inches with 160 up front?

Thanks for any input.  I have an owl bow on its way next month and would like to order some shafts in advance so I can bareshaft and get ready to fletch as soon as I can.

One other question.  has anyone used those new pre-gasket lacquered POC?  It could save quite a bit of time...

I'm betting Ed could give you a real good steer on that.  I'd guess you'll need a spine at or below 55#, but the proof will be in the shooting.

Sar, This stuff can vary from one shooter to another.... and the Owls will vary slightly in the degree of centershot from bow to bow( that is the nature of bows built from staves) But I would suggest that you buy 55-60s for use with your 160s and start by cutting them to 30" and reduce length if needed to get them in tune. You'll probably get everything perfect somewhere between 28 and 29 inches.
(BTW-I'm Ed's son and have lots of experience with Owls-usually I recommend 5 pounds under the (adjusted) AMO spine rating for use with 125s-with 160s you have built in a 5 pound reduction in dynamic spine.)

In answer to your other queries....POC(like all woods) varies in density and stiffness in relation to density. Probably 55-60s cut  in the 28-30 range with 160gr. points will weigh somewhere between 480gr and 600gr. Those are usable weights but you will probably find that you can go to 650-700 grain arrows and lose little speed. 10grains per pound is an old rule of thumb -and a good one -but we have noticed that Owls really shine with heavier arrows. My own preferred arrow woods are Ash( for heavy weights and durability), Poplar (for decent weight and easy arrow building) and Spruce(for  great straightness and easy arrowmaking) POC is also good for ease of building but both POC and Spruce are a little lighter than I really prefer.
