recurve or longbow
« on: March 11, 2007, 10:29:00 PM »
Byron Furgason said that longbows here easyier to shoot than a recurve, which goes against what I was taught. I have a Kodiak Mag. and it is tuff for me to shoot I love the thiing but it can be an unforgivin b$%@ at times. I shot a striker longbow and it felt a lot better. I know alot of you have owned both recurves and longbows , so I am hoping you can give some input.  :campfire:

I have one of both, and it seems like I always pick the longbow up on my way out the door. I have fallen in love with the sweet shooting forgiveness of the longbow.

I like them both. I do seem to shoot longbows better with a low wrist, but my Morrison Cheyenne recurve is the best shooter I've had.

As with many of these kinda questions that get posted here at PowWow, it's loaded with subjectivity.

There is no easy or hard, right or wrong stickbow - there's only what stickbow works best for you, not me, and not them other guys who'll tell their bow is the best thing since sliced bread.

And the ONLY way yer gonna figure this dilemma of yours out it is to shoot as many bows as possible.

Go to a trad shoot or trad rendezvous, join a club, visit stores that will let ya try before ya buy, seek help from trad archer friends.  There is no other way to properly help figure out what bow's gonna work best for you.  Anything else will be a crap shoot of sorts.

Heck, if it was that easy to buy the perfect stickbow, you'd never see ANY bows for sale at the classifieds.   Right?     :saywhat:

But, some opinionated words that may be of help in your stickbow quest - hybrid longbows offer a taste of both the recurve and longbow worlds.  Hybrids have the increased speed afforded by r/d limbs, the added measure of narrow limb stability, and the quietness upon release as there's never a hint of string/limb slap.

Once a stickbow style seems to gather yer fancy, deciding on draw weight and overall length come up next.  Don't overbow yerself, but do get enuf horsepower to down the game yer gonna hunt.  Get a bow length that'll fit yer draw length and hunting venues (i.e. - maybe a bit shorter for tree stands).

More important than the bow is the arrow.  In terms of weight (the 10 grains per pound of bow draw weight is still a good rule of thumb), durability, and how well it matches yer bow and you.

Go forth and have a great experience picking out your special hunting stickbow.     :wavey:

Rob.

...It is personal preference.  I know ppl that swear by long bows, I know people that swear by static recurves only..I know people that swear by horse bows...

Part of the fun of this is going to the range/club and trying out bows, exchanging experiences, and learning something new.  Kinda what we do where but without a modem.

Good luck finding YOUR bow.  I hope it is as fun and educational as the search for my bows has been.

The answers you're going to get from others is going to be a pretty good split down the middle.  Don't make your judgement based on the shooting of just two different bows.  Not all recurves and longbows shoot, or feel, the same.  The Kodiak Mag you're shooting, though a nice little bow, can be a little tough to shoot at times.  Admin hit it pretty good with his advice.

I,m not sure how to say this, I shot recurves since the late sixties, Last year have started to shoot longbows and have not picked up my recurve, still training my bow hand for lowwrist grip, Old habits are hard to break, Also had a hard time getting used to the light weight of the bow in my hand. My recurve is a Herters takedown with metal riser 68# and the longbow is 72# so the pull is not much different and I am starting to really like the longbow, but I don,t think I can pick them both up and shoot them both, they are just to different for me.

I have and shoot several of each but am more of a longbow guy when it really counts.  :)  Rob pretty much summed it up.It is something you will have to find out yourself by shooting different bows. You can not find out in hours of reading or thousands of post and questons. You got to do it.If we were all the same there would only be one kind of bow and one bowyer building them.  :)

I like my long bows but that doesn't mean I don't like my recurves. Hunted with a Bob Lee recurve in 2004; a Massie "Longhorn" LB in 2005; a Black Widow curve in 2006. Will hunt with a different Massie "Longhorn" LB this year (2007). That is the way I do it. Recurve one year, long bow the next. That way none of my bows will feel left out.  :archer:    :archer:    :biglaugh:

I love the looks and feel of a good R/D longbow. But, I shoot noticeably better with a recurve. So, since all my shooting is geared towards hunting... I shoot a recurve.
If'n you have a short recurve like a  Kodiak Mag. You might not see the differance between your shoot with a longbow. I suggest getting a 60+ long recurve. Alot more forgiving.

I am constantly buying and selling. Unfortunately, I seem to like everything I pick up. My mates all insist that I should be content with one bow and learn to shoot it well. But, shooting bows is my life and longbow or recurve I love them all.

yep feel like i got a good girl friend but I cant keep eyen the others. I like the looks of a longbow and the history ofem as well. I would really like to get one however SSGT's dont get enough cash too just up and buy everything they want. I like bear {even though every one I talk too says to beware the bear} and would love to get my hands on a patriot. I contacted them today and found that they have a year long warranty wonder if its gonna break would it happen in a year?
