How to avoid flicking your forearm?
« on: January 26, 2009, 03:16:00 PM »
My string is hitting my forearm so strong that I get a bruise when shooting though I wear an armguard. I shoot with a low wrist and rotate my forerarm so it should not intefere with the string. I did not had this problem until some weeks ago. I think my technique is okay. Any ideas? It is not only hurting but also bad for the precision.

Thanks so much,
Joe

Is your band still the same, sometimes if the string strech, or untwist, this can happen.

Joe, I'm going to assume your shooting a longbow.
Usually a recurve isn't as severe.

Since you say this is something new. I'm guessing you are torqueing the bow with your grip. Has the brace height changed on your bow?

I find with my wood longbows with low brace height I can not keep from hitting my arm at least on the follow through.

You might try a looser grip to see if it helps also place your left foot more to the left instead of closer to 90 degrees from the target. (if right handed) This will open your stance and geve a little more clearence.

are you hitting your forearm from the start of shooting or after youre tired? maybe youre lowering your wrist and locking your elbow. thats when i usually hit mine.make sure you have a slightly open stance also.

Yes, I am shooting a longbow with a locator grip (Border Griffon GL). My brace height did not change, actualy I tried to increase it a bit up to 7" but it did not help. My grip is quite loose so I guess it is not about torquing the bow. It happens right from the start when I am still strong  :)
My stand is exactly 90° what I thought is usual for the FITA shots? I will try to open it slightly. The other thing you mentioned was the locked elbow. Actually I am locking my elbow and shoulder intentionally to prevent a "collaps". Is that wrong?
What degree of hitting the armguard is normal?

joeare, though i dont shoot a long bow,i do shoot a self bow and i always have a slight bend in my bow arm with a slight cant to the bow.whenever i am tired or if over bowed,i tend to lock my bow arm and extend my shoulder thus resulting in a big ol bruise on my forearm.when my form is on i dont use an armgard unless i have a baggy sleeve on.
