need help with point weight suggestions

I shoot 3 under.

The arrows that I have are 29" from nock to back of point.

Any idea how much weight I would need to start with to find good arrow flight with this setup?

Load them pretty heavy up frony because the 5575's are pretty stiff.  They are going to be even stiffer at 29".  If they don't already have inserts I would use the 100 gr. brass and start with at least a 145 gr. point and work from there.  May not be exactly right but I Think this is a pretty good starting point.  JMO

I'll borrow this tread, as it is quite related.

I shoot 75-95s, full lenght out of a 48#@28" recurve, but drawn to 56# / 30.5".

@ 125gr tip weight they are just about abit stiff, bareshaft hitting about 5cm left from 12m

@ 175gr tip weight they are ever so slightly weak, hitting some 5cm right, from 12m again

@225gr tip weight they still fly perfectly but hit 10-15cm right.

If not "perfect", which will never happen anyway, which side to err on? Stiff or Weak?

Btw. the 29" 55-75 w 225gr tip weight fly perfect from this bow when drawn 28"

Your setup sounds almost exactly like mine.  I used to shoot GT 55/75 out of bows that are 53#@28" (my draw is 28").  The arrows were cut to 29" BOP and they flew great for me with 70 grain inserts and 145 grain points.  I have since switched back to shooting some aluminum but mostly woodies.

A lot, you will be a little on the stiff side with them at your poundage. I'd say a 100 grain brass insert with 150 grain points or heads should fly well. If that's too much head weight for you, I would probably get the 3555's. If you have a bow shop close that will let you buy one of each like I do, that would be what I would do.

My setup:

Gold Tip 3555's 28.5" long

I shoot them out of three bows like darts. A 50lb Silvertip, a 54 pound Whisperstik and a 56lb Widow.

Head weight 200 grains. Total weight is 430 grains which is very light, but I have killed many whitetails with them.

If you can get the 5575's to work I would prefer them as they are heavier but they were much to stiff for my setups.

Jason, I'd guess that you will be happy with a point weight in the 175 grain range given the shafts you're shooting (length & spine).

I agree with TJ, try some 28.5-29 inch 35/55 with 175 grains up front and I think they are better suited for 50-55# bows.

I have a 55# @ 28" Ballistik with a 9 strand 8125 string, I draw it to 29" and I shoot 29" 55/75 Goldtips with 3-5" low profile nanners. I use a 50gr brass insert, 100gr steel broadhead insert, and a 160 broadhead. Perfect flight.

I shoot 5575's cut to 29.5" in my 55# @ 28" HH Badger.  I draw just a bit past 28" and those arrows appear to fly best with 200gr. points.  I started out shooting 5575's cut to 31" from my 50# @ 28" Internature Viper (overestimated my draw length).  They fly well with either 145gr. or 175gr. points, although the 175's seems a bit better.

I'd guess 200gr. should be about right for your setup.

I just set mine up yesterday. I shoot a 50#@28" recurve and had to leave them 30.5" with 250 up front to get them just right. They ended up at 492gr. I tried the 35/55's and at 29" ( I don't want anything shorter than that) they were stiff.

Very close to my setup, 55@28 shooting 29 3/8" shafts with 100 gr brass insert, 250 grain tips, and 4x2.5" fletches.

My A&H ACS is 54#@28 and I'm shooting a 6 strand D97 string as well.  I shoot 29.5" 55/75 GTs with 175 to 200 grains up front and they fly perfect.

John Havard was right on in his earlier post, he must have done a little playing around with his bows over the years!
