Which Glue for Sideplate?
« on: February 11, 2009, 06:04:00 PM »
Hi Gang,

I have a quick question.  I have to replace the sideplate on my Herter's international Match Hunter.  The sideplate that was on it was a fairly thick piece of plain leather that was roughed to a half round shape.  It popped off today while I was shooting so I cut a piece of thin black leather that I had but now I need to know which glue to use to attach it.  What do you all use?  Thanks

Barge cement. You can buy it at WallyMart, it sticks like crazy but is easily removed, and it's made for leather.

Thanks for the info.  I will pick up a tube of Barge cement tomorrow to keep in my archery kit.  In the interim, I cut a piece of velcro (the rug side)which is peel and stick and am using that.  Seems to work great, just don't know how long it will last.  Probably should cut a couple of pieces to put in the kit also.  Thanks for the input, I appreciate it.

clean up the sideplate with denatured alcohol or a bit of acetone to remove any leftover oily residue.

The leather and Barge cement are good, but even if you go that way, put a couple of Velcro rests and side plates in your bag/pocket/daypack incase of emergency. Never hurts to be pepared!!

Like said barge is the way to go. Be careful not to affect your center shot to much by putting on a much thinner strike plate as it will weaken your dynamic spine and move your impact point right, for a right hander. Velcro works fine and easily replaced.
