Razorheads-Tanto tip or wedge?
« on: February 22, 2009, 12:58:00 AM »
Anyone using the old green Bear Raorheads  ever put a Tanto tip on them? How about a wedge? Any Pics? Which is better?

I single beveled my Zwickey 20 years ago. When I started building selfbows. At the time I met a old guy that built selfbows. He would'nt call his self a bowyer. He said that, that was someone that built glass bows. And you can't mass produce selfbows. He'd been making, shooting single bevel trade points for 50 years.I once asked him how many deer he'd killed he just said lots.
When I knew him he back in 81 he was in his late 50,s.I knew him 8 years before is death and he killer 2 or 3 deer every year.Theyed all been killer with single beveled trade points except 9 or 10 he killed with flint heads he said.He said he did that about 20 years ago just to say he made the heads and killer the deer. This was when poeple were just starting to say they harvested deer.He 'd say I don't about them fells but here in WEST VIRGINIA we harvest furit and we kill deer.He always had a big laugh over that.
I've killer 33 bucks with single beveled Zwickeys before zwickey started making there own.

Razorheads came new with a blunted "chisel" tip and were meant to be used that way. They worked very well and I see no reason to "Tanto" the point or single bevel the edge. It's a lot of work for nothing in my opinion. Just dont file them down so they have a needle tip. Keep the blunted tip thats there or round off a needle tip on a stone then sharpen the sides of the tip to make it sharp.

Yankee, The late production Razorheads have a chisel tip but the older yellow/green heads were usuually needle pointed. Chiseling IS more roll resistant than needled but Tanto/diamond tips are more roll resistant than chiseled. I have been "tantoing" my Dad's Razorheads for several years with excellent results.

Tree man, could you post a photo of one? Also , I wonder about using a file to single bevel one for left wing feathers? Think I'll try it.

I have done it with some green heads.  Just take a pair of sidecuts and snip the sharp tip off the head. Then file it down into a wedge/tanto type point.   I've never had a tip curl on game though....only on rocks 8^).

Elbow, Here ya go. I've done more radical than these but unless the tip is damaged I see no need-this little change makes an enormous difference in tip strength.

They are given opposing single bevels at the tip at a more abrupt angle than "normal" sharpening. That gives you a sharp tip but one that has no long unsupported  bit of thin steel for curling to start. Just a mild little change  increases tip strength enormously.
