Making the Flemish String Short
« on: March 15, 2007, 01:48:00 AM »
Who make their Flemish string 2 or so inches short to allow for stretch ? I do with Dacron and they settle in for the right length .
Do you also do this for Fast Flite etc ?

I make the dacron string about an inch to inch and a half short and they usually stretch into the right length.  FF material will have very little to no stretch so make them the right length and you'll be good to go.

I make mine short, but I couldn't say how much--been too long since I measured one.  Dacron does have a lot more stretch/creep, but any of them will have some slack in the twist that will come out.  I'll try to remember to measure one today and see.

I make mine to the exact length I need, then put it on the bow and stretch it. Twist up as necessary to get the right length. I'm always afraid that I'll make one too short, and not be able to use it. A little too long is no problem, you can just twist it up.

Most of the initial stretch occurs in the braiding.  For that reason, I tie my dacron and fast flite the same lengths.  Not a problem with tying a string too short if you have a fairly long taper section after completing the loop.  Just unbraid one loop and lengthen the string a little.  If you still need more length, do the same on the other end.

Never change my lengths no matter what the material.
Getting older I tend to talk to myself but, at least I know that I am as smart as the one I am talking to.
