In addition to Ken. I had a great time up there. I love the Adirondacks! I am blessed to have spent my whole life around them.I'm thinking a camp in Speculator or something. Wanna come Chuck?

Myself and 4 guys hunted the High Peaks Wilderness area back in '04 I think. No motorized access, went in a horse drawn wagon to a drop camp 5 miles in. Awesome country, great camp but the huntin' was tough to say the least. Deer were few and far between. I wouldn't hunt there again with a bow but I would go back to hunt in the snow with a rifle.

There arent many guides up there that can offer you any more than you can make happen on your own.
Next fall is gonna be even worse for deer if you can imagine that.Theyve had a tough winter.
Are you looking for a cabin or tenting? There are 40,000 acres of state land in the Moose River Plains Rec Area with some beautiful land and campsites complete with outhouses.I go up there everychance I get even though I rarely come back with meat. There are some nice cabins on Cedar River road which leads into the state land from Indian Lake.

Hmmmmm..... Maybe..... (if I can get free LOL)

We used to camp at the Lewey Lake State Campground. They had a few tent sites right off Rt.30 next to Indian Lake. We would walk across Rt.30 and follow the little stream up the mountain. If I remember right Rt.30 ran due east and west, and we hunted on the north side of 30. So with a compass you just head east or west depending on which side of the stream you were on,then follow the stream down to the lake.(or you could just head south untill you hit Rt.30.) We also used to hunt the Speculator Tree Farm land down by the "pink pig". If you've been around Speculator years ago you HAVE to know where that is LOL!!!!!

We'll be talkin' to ya!!!!!

I belong to a camp on the edge of the Siamese Wilderness Area. I have hunted up in that part of the world since 1971. Not many bowhunters go into the north for the lack of deer, but you can have a chance for a bear, maybe see a moose and if you do see a deer it could be the buck of a lifetime. I plan to spend some time up there this fall and could always use some company.Adkken and I have become friends and kinda think along the same lines. I'm going to do some ground blinds this summer and scout for what few deer maybe left... lol. Keep me in mind if your intrested.   ron w

Woodchucker, Rt. 30 runs north and south, I have hunted and fished from those same campsites. And yes the PIG is still there in all its glory.

Well it's been awhile Ron LOL!!!!!

I know Rt.30 runs north and south, but I thought that section ran east-west along the lake, then swung north up into the village. Like I said,it's been awhile.....(about 30years LOL)

Glad the pig is still there!!!!! Just wouldn't seem right if he wasn't LOL.

Ron,
I went to college and lived about twenty years in Johnstown so this thread started the memories rolling. If you would be interested in corresponding with a old disabled t/d maker send me a p/m. Thanks.

Brian,
i know of a few good spots that would be perfect however as stated above a big north woods bow hunt is VERY TUFF if your looking to make meat. there is a TON of area around route 30. i just lost my favorite hunting area and i am auctually planning to do a lot of scouting/hiking farther North this year. you are welcome to join me. i have a few topo maps i can show you where i use to hunt. the deer are less in number but i did killl 2 SLAMMERS way back in and i know of many who have also taken real brutes!!

Ken, maybe we can can expand the ADK attack to include a big woods hunt somehow. We'll have to talk next time we shoot. I'll be back from vacation shortly and we can talk about it. Rick I'll give you shout sometime.

Ron,
i auctually had disscussed this with John (Adirondackman) about moving the hunt to bigger woods that would accomadate more hunters. the spot by my mothers is very good but its VERY HARD to get thatmany hunters in place without spooing deer. if we were hunting big woods where drivers and watches could make 5 -10 mile swings would be much, much more productive. sit for ay 5 hours and make a push.

Just what ever you do, stay away from that darn Ken Mowery. Used to be, all I hunted was southern zone. Would walk 100 yards from my car to my stand, all across flat level ground. Life was simple. Now after hunting with him, all I wanna do is bust my butt climbing those dacks up and down. Careful man...
