Shrews?
« on: February 26, 2009, 01:55:00 PM »
Hey All,
I am thinking of ordering a shrew after all the talk I keep hearing. I was just on the site and my question for all you is this. What is the biggest difference in the models and what made you decide on a certain model? Also if you could post a pic along with your explanation that would be a nice bonus. Also if anyone in SE MN reads this and has one I could try and shoot that would be great.
Thanks guys and I look forward to your responses.

Ain't nothin' like a "new bow". If ya ordered one it would take about a year to get. Spring is almost here and so will be trad shoots. Try one out first. Or just buy a "new to you, used one" from this site.

Bows don't go stale and you don't have to feed them. That's why I keep up with the buy/sell/trade action. It's fun... Anyway...

I can't do pictures but own a Super Shrew Gold. Got it here on Trad Gang. Great Move On My Part! You can't go wrong with a Shrew.

My 2 cents...

I couldn't decide on just one style so I have them all!!!  The biggest difference between the Super Shrews and the Classic Hunter and Lil Favorite is the riser length.  They are all great bows and I dont think you can go wrong with any of them.  Do a search in the Powwow and you will find all the pics you need to make you want one even more!!

I have a 58" Super Shrew and a 58" Shrew Scout.  The reason I ended up with these models is because they were for sale (hard to find one for sale).  They both shoot great and very similar but I kind of prefer the longbow just because I like longbows.  I have a takedown longbow on order, and even though I've heard nothing but rave reviews about the shorter classics I think I'll stick with a 58" SS.  Mainly because I have one and like it and 58" is short enough for me.  Here are pics of my SS.

I own a 54" Classic Hunter and a 56" SuperShrew longbows. I also had a 54" Lit favorite Shrew recurve for a while and sold it it Allan here on the forum a couple months back. They are all very nice bows but the 54" Classic Hunter is my Favortie.

I now own Cody's Lil Favorite, as he said, along with some Classic Hunters. I have them in both boo and foam core and have a foam core, carbon backed CH on order. Some of the Shrews have Bow Bolts so they can be taken down. They are all great bows. I can't say I truly have a favorite, but if I could only have one it would be a 56" foam/carbon Classic Hunter with a Bow Bolt, because a Shrew longbow is THE classic Shrew. Like Tim, I prefer to own several types of Shrews.

I originally ordered a Super Shrew, 62" which is the length I was accustomed to shooting ... just loved the looks of the bow and wanted one mostly for that reason, having never shot one or even seen one in person. But during the long wait, as I watched these posts as you are doing, Rob, and talking to everyone with any Shrew experience, and most importantly talking on the phone with Ron, I became convinced that the Classic Hunter was just as lovely and shot just as well as the SS, and Ron himself had said believes his best all-around hunting bow is the CH. So I changed my order to a 54" CH. Subsequently, I learned that all the glowing claims -- most from owners, few from Shrew, who doesn't need to wave their own flag -- were true and better. Better yet, aside from looks and charismatic shooting personality, I fell in love with the shortness of this bow, to the point I'll never hunt with a full-length bow again. So I ordered a second, almost identical CH, but this one a take-down. My advice is to go all the way with whichever design you decide on, and get a take-down and any other "fancies" you fancy the first time around, at least if you ever fly and want to maximize an already high resale value. I have not shot a Shrew recurve but knowing Gregg Coffey, The Bowyer, as I now do, it seems certain they must also be absolutely top-flight. Enjoy the wait as best you can. Consider it an engagement. I just received this 56" Classic Hunter (carbon/bamboo) a couple of days ago, so I can't speak as to how well I can shoot it, but it is a very sharp looking bow. I own about 7 bows; the two things that set the shrew bow apart from most other bows and jump out to me are:
1. the diminutive size, I have read it compared to a light fly-rod.
2. the grip. I love the grip, I can tell you that!
Performance-wise I can't speak to, will have to wait and see.

I "settled" (ha ha ha)for a 56" Classic Hunter (the first 56" made) due to my rediculous 32" draw.  This was the model Ron/Gregg felt could handle the draw.  This bow draws a flat 2.5#/inch from 27 to 32.  Ron has truly designed a fantastic bow, and Gregg is a master builder.  I never figured a short bow would be an option, but man is this one heaven......  Which ever one you pick, I'm sure you will be pleased.  I think the Classic Hunter is the best all around bow in Ron's line.  I cannot imagine what it is like with the new materials (carbon) they are using......

Three sets of Father/Son Shrews...now that Smith is a young adult, he uses any bow he wants to shoot ;o)

Bow on far left is the original Raco by John McCullough, Ron's bowyer at the time.

Set 1 is Limited Edition "Lucky Number 7" and the only authorized clone made by Carl Miller (Plywood bender)...complete with knives.

Set 2 are Chameleons...one is 56" the other 54". Both are bevel lock take downs and are our traveling bows.

Set 3 was completed in January with the addition of a 54" Classic Hunter to match my original 56" Super Shrew Delux.

Have found that the shorter Shrews are best for still hunting and drive by shaftings ;o)

Jamie ,
Give your Shrew some time to grow on you and I promise it will grow on you real fast . I shoot a 54 in. classic hunter and this bow is king when it comes to about any hunting situation I can simulate .

Got the shrew in the mail today and WOW! Talk about a sweet grip, I will post pics of my first 5 arrows I shot when I get a chance to download. All in the 10 at 17 yards. I think I just got SHREWED! Mine is 58" and is 53 @ 28".
What type of quivers do you guys use on your shrews!
