Wood for making first bow.....need suggestions
« on: March 08, 2009, 07:21:00 PM »

This is the piece of bolivian rosewood that I am going to use for the limb veneers for making a one piece recurve...the first try at this! I am going to be helped by a very good amatuer bowyer thankfully. Anyway, I am trying to figure out what wood would look good with this rosewood for the riser. I am kind of settling on wenge wood. But would love to get other suggestions. Thanks.

I'd probably use some common woods like maple for my first stab at it just in case you completely mess up.  Maybe save the rosewood and other exotics for another bow.

Just my 2 cents...good luck!

tough call. It's addicting so just start making 'em and one will be "right". Just kidding.. sort of. I'm finishing my first 'glass' bow and already thinking about how to change the next one. sorry no help but I'm ready to watch you build it.

How would you change the next one Russ?

Yeah, you're probably right Ron. But I just love beautiful wood...so I think I'll just jump in with both feet and see what I can do.

canary wood would look good next to the rosewood or for a common wood osage would look good in my opinon

If that's the case, maybe get some nice Myrtle for the riser. It's native to Oregon.

I like that idea Ron.  I'm going over to the guy's shop to look at wood and talk. I'll have to see what he has too. I went to a local wood broker the other day. All the wood that I could use for a riser was 6 to 10 ft. long! Spendy stuff! It made me appreciate why bowyer have to charge so much for some of these bows.

Nighthawk, I'll look into Canary...I don't know that wood.

They will cut you two feet off if you leave them 6 at crosscut hardwoods.. Have to find at least an 8 footer and they will do it. Sometimes it depends on the wood but I've had them cut some before. Maybe we'll have to split a piece... ok i'm getting ahead of myself again.

Good to know Russ. Looks like I might have to pay them a visit again.
