frist bear tag ?

I just recieved email of a spring bear tag. But I have never hunted bear. I plan on diy hunt over bait.those that have baited bear, if you have any suggestions would be nice. bait type, locations, set ups, ect.... anything that has help in the past.  thanx

Play the wind!  Bears can smell like nobodys business, so get your stand in the best wind position and keep em low.  10-12 ft at most for good shot angle.  Sucks smelling bait all night, but that will give you the best sucess.  Good luck!! dino

Any trappers round your way? If so, see if they are trapping beavers and ask them for a few carcasses. Bears love beavers! Don't put carcass in barrel just wire it to tree within shooting distance. Pure anise oil is also a big big hit with bears. Start your bait early as soon as bears start moving.

I've never bear hunted either but my good buddy did and some of the things they used were to set their stand location so there was a lake or obstacle behind them.It just eliminated one area to watch, everything was in front of them.They also went to a bakery and got their day old sweets that were going to be thrown away.They also were able to get the donut grease that also was going to be disposed of.One other thing they used was a thing called a honey burn.They poured honey in a coffee can and lit it on fire or heated the honey someway.Thus the smell went further.A word of caution though because my friend did this maneuver for his dad whom was stationed in a tree stand.He no sooner started the burn and a huge blackie came right in to the smell.Luckily my buddy was able to hide behind some bushes but he said staring down a bear wasn't alot of fun.ED

Check your states reg's. I could be wrong, but I think in Minnesota baiting with a animal carcass is illegal. But the bear do love the beaver, fresh pig hide, chicken entrails, etc.

Wind direction and cover. While it's nice to be able to see a long ways on stand the best baits I've hunted all had one thing in common.Heavy cover around the bait. I like to set up in a spot that has a constant wind direction. Funnel's are nice but when you've got two or three different terrain feature meeting at the same spot the wind directions have a tendency swirl.
Get as much smell/stink in the air to get your bait started. Oncethey are coming in the bears will tell you what they like.

Chicken grease and dod food.Ive hunted with guides and brought my own grease and when we left they where trying to find grease, the baits go crazy when grease was added.

      I am not sure where you are at in Utah, but Steadman did a hunt along here last year of his Utah Bear hunt maybe he will chime in.
