Owls and turkeys
« on: March 11, 2009, 10:13:00 PM »
What is the relationship between owls and turkeys? Why do the toms respond to the owl call?
Probably a newbie question, but I gotta know. Getting ready for my first turkey hunt. Thanks

The toms respond to any "loud" noise. I have heard em sound off to thunder, cars, gunshots, coyote howls, crows, owls, screen doors slamming...
The owl is just a "natural" locator call. Best used around first light, or a little before. After that, many switch to a crow call.
Another month or so, come on up, I will show ya how to put em to bed.

Owls are predators of young turkeys, taking them off the roost. The turkeys never forget...

I believe Jamie's right on with the "why" of it....

Don, I don't think it's for that reason. If it was they'd be giving their location away to a predator. It would be the with coyote howls...if they gobbled because of the reason you specified, they'd be letting them know where they are.....
