I have been considering a couple of these bows also. I am looking for a quick, light, quiet, and short hunting bow in either a LB or curve, and I would like a LB either on the short side or long if I can find a short curve I like. So far the only thing I have really liked much in a short bow has been the Shrew.
This weekend while traveling around on a little three day get away with the wife I visited JD to check out his bows. The Great Jashu stopped in at JD’s so I could shoot his 56” 50# mojo along with JD’s 56” 55#. I shot the 60”, now infamous, demo mojo. I also was able to shoot Mojo's (the trad ganger not the bow) Thunderstick mag; it was there to be refinished by JD. Then I stopped in at Mojo's on the way south, and I shot his MOAB. Too many bows and not enough time to really work with them all and enjoy them, but it was a great help in getting more familiar with these bows, and of course it was great to meet some other trad gangers.
The 56” bow was great, and as smooth a draw as anything I have shot so far. I would never have known it was not 60 or 62”. JD’s bow has the standard grip with the palm swell. I didn’t think I would like it, but was surprised that it fit my medium size hand decently. It really stayed put solid in my hand, and it was very repeatable. It was like it was glued into my palm. After shooting it quite a bit it started to give me a bit of a pressure point in my palm, and I started to not care for it as well as Jashu’s grip. His bow had less projection in the palm swell. It was a good positive repeatable grip, but it spread the force out over my palm a little better for my hand size.
I shot the kajikastik in a 60” 60#@29 and liked that a lot more than I thought I would. I was picturing a much larger riser. I thought it would be heavier and bulkier. It was very trim and light in the hand with just a little more weight than the mojo. I hope to get a chance to shoot a 56” kajikastik before I decide what to get. Even at almost 10# more than I currently shoot is was smooth and fun to shoot. I liked the grip, and I think that grip is more like the classic grip, but I am not sure until I ask JD about that.
When I first picked up the Mag I thought I would love that bow. The grip fit my hand very well. I thought it was fast and hard hitting, but the arrows I was shooting didn’t care for the bow and shot very stiff. I liked it, and I tried it several times. However, for me the mojo was the clear winner in the short bow match up, and after switching around a few times I shot only the different mojo bows the rest of the time. The Mag pulled smooth at my just short of 29 draw. The bow just seemed to jump around in my hand. I don’t know if my wrist was a little high, or I was torking it a little. I just didn’t shoot right in my hand. There is a lot to like about the Mag so I will be shooting them more if I get a chance to see if I can improve my form with it.
I also had a chance to shoot Mojo’s MOAB. Between the Mag and the MOAB the MOAB was the clear winner for me. Even though both bows were about the same weight the MOAB actually felt a few pounds heavier to me for some reason. I don’t know if it was a little off of want it was marked at or if it just has a different feel. Despite a little heavier feel on the draw I loved the way it shot. It was dead in my hand and with a lot of punch. Despite some sloppy shooting when trying to feel the bow and how it reacted on the shot, as soon as I concentrated on just shooting it was dead on where I was looking. It would not take long to get in the grove with that bow.
So far for me the 56” mojo looks like the short, light, quiet, and fast bow I have been looking to get, and a MOAB looks like what I want for a long, smooth, quiet longbow with a lot of heavy arrow punch.
