youth workshop.. day after
« on: March 22, 2009, 11:28:00 AM »
I was just having my morning coffee reflecting back on the bow making workshop are club Traditional Bowhunters of Maryland put on at Oregon Ridge Nature center in MD yesterday.. What a success!! I was amazed at how many young kids are interested in making bows.. We had 5 stations for about 25 kids, station 1 making bows from ratan, st 2 arm guard  an finger tabs, st 3 string making, st 4 painting bows which was my daughters station an finally a shooting st with a instructor..the cut off # for kids was 25,it ended up being 41 on a waiting list. WOW! I had the pleasure of working with a hand full of kids from 9yr-14yrs old at the bow making station we work with ratan which is a grass from over seas an its easy to work, you can have a shooting bow in about 1hr. We had power sanders an band saws, but for the most part the kids i worked with used draw knifes they where more than willing to work so i left them have at it. These kids for the most part where getting in to it BIG TIME especially the young ones. When finished these kids left with a arm guard, finger tab, 4 arrows an a bow with a string that they made by them selfs an some safety shooting instruction .With a turn out like this it leads me to hope an think archery still has a bright future..Thanks to everyone that helped especially Bill Nash who was instrumental in carrying the bulk of the load as always. If anyone that was attending has any pics please post
