Am I Spined Correctly?
« on: April 01, 2009, 03:48:00 PM »
Goldtip traditional arrows 3555 (has .500 spine):

cut to 26", 100gr brass insert and 125 fieldtip/broadhead, feathers, arrow wraps, goldtip nock. Pulling 42lbs with a 25" drawlength.

Just wondering if this arrow is indeed right for me. I of course feel that it is, but would like some reassuring!

Center cut bow? Cutting em that short might have stiffened em up a bit. If they arent flting well, experiment with different point weights.

Pretty stiff for your set-up. You really would be better off with a .600 if you want them short.

Cut them to 27" 100gr insert 175 to 200gr point is a good starting point. Mike.

Give us more info so we can help. What bow are ya shooting. Those 35/55 that short are gonna be stiff out of any 42# bow unless ya put 400 grains up front. If you are shooting a high perfromance recurve cut past center a .600 spine cut to 27"s with 225 grains up front shuld work for ya. Shawn

They would be about right at full length. It won't hurt a thing to shoot longer arrows. You really need to bareshaft test one or two cutting a little at a time untill they spine perfect. Then you can cut the rest.

Sorry this info is a little too late.

Ok...it is time to give you the story!  I don't have an arrow saw, so I checked the goldtips arrow selection chart and chose the "correct arrow" for my set up. Took some advice and had the dealer cut them to 26". Bought the 100gr brass inserts and decided to start with 125 grain tip.   I have not installed the inserts yet, because I have been splicing feathers and fletching them.  I just came to the realization, on here reading yesterday, that I have probably made a poor choice. I have not even shot these arrows yet! I realize that arrow tuning, etc is trial and error, but if this set up is a bit stiff, how bad will that effect my accuracy? Seeing how I can't cut the arrows, would I be able to solve spine problems by adding tip weight? How much weight?

For those who asked: Shakespeare bow that is center cut.

I appreciate your friendship and help!

Try  www.bowmaker.net  go to the tuning section.

You can try very heavy points.200 grains even with the 100 grain brass inserts still might not be enough.

You can shoot arrows too stiff and unless you are getting a lot of shelf contact you might not notice too much accuracy loss especially at 20 yards and under.

The problem becomes that with a low poundage rig and your short draw length an out of tune arrow won't penetrate near as well for hunting.Even if you are able to add enough weight to tune, you are going to have a very heavy shaft so the cast of your bow will suffer. The cast may be fine though for shorter shots.A lot depends on what you want.

Go ahead and shoot them.It will be hard to sell them that short anyway. You can use them to work on your form and stump shoot. You can get some more later when you read and study some more and learn all your options.

You could for instance shoot a .600 from that bow and use less point weight if you would like a lighter faster arrow.
