bear bait tactics/tip
« on: April 06, 2009, 09:50:00 AM »
I am getting set to start getting my bear bait sites ready and remembered something  had an old timer show me. You know that there are going to be a bunch of bugs out when  you start hunting and you will be wearing bug dope when hunting.  What he said was take a little smear of bug dope and put it by the barrel every time you bait. As a result the smell of bug dope becomes "normal" to the bears that hit the bait often, so when you go to sit it you won't spook them with the scent of bug spray.

What do you guys think of this?

the old timer is right, you can also ware a T shirt for a week with out washing it and hang it where you will be setting so if you are not sent less it should help.        I bated bear for 6 years. We can't do that any more in Wa.
Take the long way around.

If you're going to use bug dope, then that does work. Like hunt it said, most folks use thermacells now, so a downwind stand site is still important. I put up two stands per bait, set at 120* from each other, one downwind for prevailing wind and one downwind for contrary wind. It's a shame to have a site getting hit real good and have to not hunt it on days the wind doesn't cooperate.
