Question about arrow tuning
« on: April 06, 2009, 10:28:00 AM »
When cutting down your arrows a 1/2 inch at a time to get the spine correct, I assume you use field tips of the weight of your broadheads. Do, you glue in the inserts and screw in the tips, and then have to try to get the insert back out or am I missing something here? This is new to me. Just a little unclear as to how the business end of the arrow is set up in this testing phase, while I'm checking and cutting. If you old hands will pardon me while I peddle along with my training wheels still on for a little while.    :)  Your direction will be greatly appreciated.

I'm not old but the answer to your question I would say yes. When testing arrows I just put a tiny bit of glue on to hold it in or else you'll lose it in the target. Then just heat the field point up to get it out.

Depends on the type of shaft, tapered shafts require insert removal to cut from the front, non tapered shafts just pull the knock and cut from the rear.

I use hot melt to glue in inserts for tuning, others have luck with something to snug up the insert like saran wrap or plumbers tape.

Once you start getting close to the correct arrow length drop to 1/4" cuts.

I take a plastic grocery bag and stick the insert into the bag and then into the shaft.  It keeps the insert in place while I am playing around.  When I decided everything is good, I pull the insert out, get rid of the plastic from the bag and then glue the inserts.

Never Ever cut until you verify with point weight that they are indeed too weak for the point weight you want to shoot. For example, if you want to shoot 145gr heads, if they indicate weak with 145's, perfect with 125's, and stiff with 100's, then you cut. Overly stiff arrows can show a weak indication. Failure to verify with point weight will make matters worse and you can't fix it once you cut....O.L.

Point well taken OL.

I'm going to be starting out with aluminum arrows plenty long and a field point test kit.

Thanks for the replies fellows. More questions to follow I'm sure.
