Spent time with a legend last Saturday...
« on: April 25, 2009, 07:36:00 PM »
A friend, Todd Hunt and I went over to visit with a local legend...

He's even become more with the single bevel craze as he was the originator of the grizzly broadhead several years ago...

Harry Elburg of Madison, IN.

We spent the morning with Harry and listened to some great stories of the broadhead business and building bows...  Fascinating man...

Really had a great time... Thanks for taking the time for us Harry!

Here's some pics...

I have two bows Harry Made, an Elburg Jaguar Mite, 54" and a Jaguar Special, 64", both are incredible bows. I spoke to Harry on the phone once, what a gentlemen.

It's cool when we get to spend time with people who have forgotten more than we know.

Good for you and Harry to have shared an afternoon. Sounds like a great time.

What's great about a visit like that is he enjoyed it as much as you did.

Good stuff.

Mr. Elburg is a genius. When he puts his mind onto something he gets it done. If that man had gone to engineering school we would've had a man on Mars long time ago.

I make it a point to visit with him 2-3 times a year. Most times I go after the ITBA shoots in Scottsburg. I always ask him to come to the shoots, but he is always busy with his "projects".

Jonathan and Todd, what we need to do, and I told Harry about it few weeks ago over the phone, is to get a few guys together and bring a video camera/tape recorder and spend a few hours asking him questions about bows, broadheads and all of his accomplishments so it all can be saved for posterity. I am glad you went. Like TJ said he probably enjoyed having you guys there. God willing I will see you at the may shoot.

God bless,

Jose

I also have two of his bows... a condor and a cherokee that I just picked up not to long ago... I just sold a Cheetah that was high poundage...

I'd love to have one of his Jaguar Specials... in 60" and low to mid 50's... just don't see any for sale...

Dave,
That was something I noticed right away about the heads Harry had there was the grind being different...

Jose,
While we were there, my wife called and asked about something and I shared with her those exact thoughts that Harry was a genius... and he just laughed it off...

What's wild is that I went to school with his two youngest... His son told me that his dad was making bow when we were in high school and I was shooting wheels at the time...

It was a great day...

Very cool! Another legend from Indiana! Someone DOES need to record the story of this man.

Twigflicker, What is the Cherokee? Any possibility of getting a pic? By the way, quite a few guys around here have Elburgs, my son in law has a 50" Jaguar Mite and my buddy has a 54" Jaguar Special and a Condor. Actually my buddy has two jag Mites, one is left hand.

Elbow,

The Cherokee is a flatbow version of the Jaguar. Same bow, but with wide/thin limbs as opposed to narrow/deep limbs. This applies to his late Jaguar and Cherokee models. The original Jaguar was a reverse riser longbow 66" long. The original Cherokee was flatbow type of bow with reverse riser. Later he started making them shorter and shorter, down to 48", and bending the limbs more and more. If I remember when I get home in a week or so I will send you pictures of the old Jaguar and Cherokee. Unfortunately, I do not have any of his latest Jaguar/Cherokee short models.

God bless,

Jose

Elbow,

Jose knows his Elburgs... The only pics I have are of the riser...

When it is strung it has more of the classic D look to it while being 60"... Great shooting bows...

Mark,

Unfortunately Harry no longer builds bows... He tutored a young man by the name of Adam Proctor who now uses Harry's forms etc... His bow company is called Risen Son Archery...

Harry did build a 64" recurve... it was quite popular around here...

Jonathan
