Bow for my 12 yr old
« on: May 01, 2009, 12:53:00 AM »
heya everyone

looks like I'm taking off my training wheels and gonna try trad for a bit, I have already  done alot of reading and talked to some very informative people and finally decided on the bow I'm gonna buy, my real question is.....

My 12 yr old son has decided he wants to join me in trad and leave his compound for a longbow, any suggestions for a bow for him. He seems to want a longbow, probably because that's what i'm getting. I have looked at the mad dog bows, but wondering if those are a little too small for him??? I have never handled one so i'm not sure, I would like to stay under $200cdn if possible just as an estimate on price. not sure what he would be pulling for poundage, he has no trouble with #30 compound, actually says it's too light for him but that's as far as the limbs go on his bow.

well thanks in advance for any and all help.

Black Rhino makes a full line of great youth bows.

Another vote for Maddog. He's a great guy and a sponsor here to boot.

What ever route you go make sure you keep it light weight because he will get tired out pretty quick pulling the full weight.

I've got a real nice Hickory self bow, Rawhide backed its around 64" and 38-40# @28".It would be a great bow to start on. Seeing as us Fellow Canucks "Gots" to stick together LOL! if you want it its yours.

If had to do it all over again, i would of bought my daughter a ILF.  ILF system gives u 5#s off adjustment in poundage per set a limbs. Kids never out grow it u just keep buying selling limbs as they grow..Its a great system most risers will accept long bow or recurve  limbs as long as they are a ILF system.. I shoot one myself there great.. Tradtech has many selections for reasonable $, there is also alot of used stuff out.. once u have the riser u can buy used limbs of all quality over the net.. CHECK IT OUT GOOD LUCK

thanks for all the responses guys, we have been looking at quite a few bows and my son seems to like the dryad Pheonix, so that is one of our possibilities, we will keep looking and researching until he makes up his mind and we find one that fits his needs.
