Trad Only carbon arrows
« on: May 07, 2009, 12:37:00 PM »
Saw the 3 Rivers ad for Trad only carbon arrows. Figured I might give them a try. When I looked in my catalogue and on their website there are charts to look at to determine what shaft size you need. (300-400-500 etc. 1 chart says recurve with a fast Flight string, the other says longbow with a fast flight string. I don't shooot fast flight, I use the good ol'e fashion Dacron. Does that mean carbons don't work for me?

Carbons will work just fine with a Dacron string. Normally you will need a lighter spine than what our charts say. What is your draw length & weight? What length arrow are you looking to shoot? What point weight also?

Weights vary from 45-50. Draw length is about 28. Most of my arrows are about 29 1/2 inches.
125 grain points.

Thanx for the quick response and please let me know which ones to get as i am anxious to try them out.

Might want to change the wording of the chart or make an additional chart. I would imagine there are others like me who read that and got scared away.

If this is your first attempt at seting up carbon shafts... Try the Gold Tip shafts first. Great system where you can "tune" the arrow for perfect arrow flight. Either add weight to the nock or point ends to achieve perfect arrow flight.

I started shooting the traditional Gold Tips and could not be happier. Its not uncommon for others to mistake them for wood shafts.

Migra Bill,

I've been shooting Beman ICS shafts (which is what these are -- Beman ICS Classics) for about 8 years now. The lightest spine they offer is 500, and that will still be way too stiff for your setup with a 125-grain tip.

I'd go with JDS3's advice and use Gold Tips with the adapter weight system. They're much less expensive, and you should be able to find perfect tune while still using the point weight you desire.

The Traditional Only will be coming out in a 600 spine. Easton is currently working on them right now for us. I do not know when they will be in stock, but that should work good with your set up.

Beman currently makes the ICS Energy shaft in spines from 360 to 780. They only come in black, but you can find them online for about $60/dozen.

you could shoot the 500 with a  100 gr. brass insert.that would give you 225gr. up front.
those fly perfect from all of my bows 45-53#.

I am shooting out of a checkmate firebird recurve that is 50 lb at 28 inch and I draw 28 1/2 true draw, the arrow are cut for 29 1/2 with 3 5.5 inch bananna style feathers. I have the BH being used are muzzy 125 gr bh or 125 gr target / field points.

I have been using the cheapest bemen or now the easton powerflight in the 500 size and they fly well.

A buddy has the almost same setup with a different older bear bow from the late 60's and he had to leave the length of arrow at 30 inch to get best flight.

hope we help you...
Bill
Like a lot of other archers I started with just working with one arrow and fine tuning by cutting the shaft at about 1/2 inch at a time. till I found the sweet spot.
