Legacy Spine Help
« on: May 12, 2009, 07:36:00 AM »
I shoot a 52@27 caribow featherhorn longbow, 54@27 Widow Psr, and a 58@28 super shrew.  Is there an aluminum shaft that would spine well for all of these bows. I draw 27 3/4 from the string to the front of the shelf (clothes pin method)  Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks

You might have to try one of the thin wall shafts like a 2016 and load up the point weight to match the bow weights. The 2016 might be a strech for 58#. On the other hand the 2018 might be to much spine for the 52# bow. I am not familar with the featherhorn longbow but it would need to be close to "cut to center" for the 2018 or front loaded to reduce some of the spine. See if you can get 2 or three of each to try. Maybe some one that has gone to carbon can make you a deal.

A 2016 would be a good choice, but like said may not work for the 58# SS.My SS took alittle heavier spine.A 2018 may be a better choice and will put you around 525 grs. with a 125 gr.I shoot 2018's out of alot of my bows, even flew great from my 55#@28 Savannah.

2018 cut 28.5 or29 should work 125 tip weight.

2018s should work ok if your bows are cut to center.

I shoot 2018's cut 29" BOP out if my Fox LB which is a mild R/D, 60"long, 55#@my 28" draw with a TS-1 string and I also shoot them out of my old 57#, 60" Bighorn TD with a B50.
I load the front with a 125 gr head and a 75 gr steel insert to give me 200 gr's upfront for a total arrow weight of 600 gr. and they shoot great.
I can also shoot a 125 head but I get just a little better flight with the 200gr head.

2018 Legacy's shoot great out of all of my mid 50's # longbows. That might be a good starting point.

I hot glued an 87 grain .25 caliber bullet inside the shaft of my 2016 aluminum arrows, just behind the insert. Gives me about 230 gr. up front. This gives me a fairly heavy arrow, plus plenty of FOC weight so they fly real well too. Now, I did have to build my shelf material out some on my bow to allow for the weaker spined shaft, but that was easily done also.

Don't be afraid to even try heavier spined! I shoot 2117 out of 53lb. grizzly recurve, 55lb. black locust selfbow, and 56lb. bamboo backed osage. I draw 27" and cut arrows to 29", 180 grain points. Fly great and alot of weight.
