Arrow Selection - questioning myself
« on: May 15, 2009, 12:30:00 PM »
No matter how much I practice, I just cant hold those tight groups @ 20-25 yards.
Now I'd like your opinions.
Here are my specs.
PSE 55# Takedown recurve
Cut past center if not center cut.

I pull 28"
Anchor top thumb knuckle to Cheekbone
I'm shooting 2117 legacy @ 29"
125 grain tips

I keep reading that I should be shooting 2018's with my setup.
I bought a few to test, and they seem to wobble in flight. At least my 2117's fly straight "as an arrow". I'm about to purchase another doz. and I'm questioning my choice if spine. Any suggestions on a easily available aluminum spine that might suit me better? I've been shooting this setup for years, but I've hit an accuracy impass.

THANKS!

I just orderes 4 test arrows from Elite arrows for when my tip comes in to see which works best. Maybe that would help. try a few diffent weights and see what happens.

If the 2018's wobble and the 2117's don't, there's your answer to that question.  2117 has been very popular shaft for many years for good reason, they shoot well from lots of bows and are tough.  Now we just need to get you some good woods.   :D

Thanks for putting that simply Fletcher.
I have been considering the jump to wood. I've just been afraid they wouldn't hold up as well as the aluminum. Well, that could open a whole other conversation.
I sure would like to blame my equipment for the odd groupings, Hate to blame it on operator error.

I don't know what you mean by tight, but there are few trad shooters who can consistently shoot tight groups, say 4 inches, at 20-25 yards.  Stickbows are close range weapons.

4" groups consistently sounds Awesome.
I'm trying to keep all mine in a paper plate. Always seem to have two or three per dozen outside of that.
I might just  be wanting too much consistency, but I REALLY don't like to wound an animal if I can minimize the chances.
I want so much to shoot like La Clair.

imo,2117s are great for 70/80# bows granted the recurve will handle a stiffer spined arrow than a longbow, even the modern ones.i would think a 2113 cut to 28 1/2-29" with 125 gr.tip would be a better choice that the two arrows you'v mentioned.robert

I shoot a 55# @ 28" recurve with the Legacy 2117s cut to 29 with 100 grn brass inserts and 125 tips and they seem to fly great. I use the inserts that are made for AD Trads.

70-75 or 75-80 spine shafts of wood should work just right. That's with 125 grn points. Add point weight for better flight & FOC.

I believe the 2117 are too stiff even the 2018s may be. The PSE you are shooting is not a high performance bow and will shoot a spine closer to the actual weight. I say try a 2016 and see what happens, if you can shoot a 8" group at 25 yards you would be one of the better shooters out there. I read what a ot of people say about there groups and than see them shoot, as Orion said very, very few guys and gals can keep them to 4"s at 20 yards. Shawn

well said shawn.to realy shoot consistant 3"4" 6 arrow groups you have to spend a lot of money and time on arrows.i have so many different spined aluminum arrows i can't even remember, some of them like,2012,2013,2016,2112,1912,1913,of which i shoot a lot of,i have 3 or 4 sets cut to different lengths, some with goldtip weights on the back of the insert.i tap out all my inserts so i can add weights to if needed.point i'm trying to make,to get down to that degree of accuracy, you have to maybe try several different spines and point weights, and lengths ect.plus shoot a couple hundred arrows a day, ever day. you have to be commited, and find the right combo of arrow and bow to do it.good luck, have fun

Ron, are you shooting f.f. on this bow? I shoot 2117 out of a 53 grizzly rec. and 55lb.and 56 lb. selfbows,29'' and 180 pt. I just purchased some pine, chundoo shafts at 15.00 a doz. from Larry at Lost Nation. They are sweet, 70/75lbs..same spine as my 2117s. Lots of advice on here ,but your shooting style will dictate alot. Keep at it, and good shootin, Steve

Well the Granddaughters have gone home with their parents now, and here I am seeing that I started a discussion of what accuracy is. I’m Sorry for that.
I don’t know if an 8” group is good or bad by anyone else’s standards.
I know that is my current goal.
4” groups are certainly a wish. Shooting a coin out of the air, probably ain’t never gonna happen but ooooh would I love too!
I’m just a back yard shooter that has never competed with anyone.  I’ve been shooting since ’66, and rarely take the bow off the wall that I don’t shoot at least 100 shots. I’m addicted! I love to play!
I have taken squirrels, rabbits, a woodchuck, and even a chipmunk with my bow and arrow.
This past two years are the first time I attempted to take a Deer with stick and string. This last season, at 20 yards and 1 ft., I hit low and behind by 3-4”.  It was a pass through with a lot of blood, but after two days of tracking, I gave up. I lost him!
I get sick every time I think of it. I will not let that happen again if I can help it.
Now, I don’t have enough money to have multiple sets of arrows & weights. I shoot the only Bow I own, but I know it is far superior to what my ancestors shot. My original question was intended to see if I missed something along my way.
I’ve been shooting the same spine arrows for a couple decades now, and maybe my style has adapted to them.
I certainly do appreciate all the kind advise you folks have offered, but I guess the real answer cannot be found on a forum. I need to actually try some options in person.
I do thank you very much for your recommendations. I will take them with me to my fletcher.
Thanks again!
Ron

Shoot one arrow at a time. To heck with groups! That squirrel , groundhog etc. didn't care what your groups were like! What about broadheads? You have to set the bar, Ron! I know ole timers who can't hit the barn door at twenty yards, But knock the nat off a squirrel at twenty yards, and get their deer. Good shootin!
