Adapting a Jig for Making Kid Bow Strings
« on: May 18, 2009, 08:42:00 PM »
In helping someone to build a kids bow, I found that my standard Flemish jig wouldn't make strings short enough.  Yesterday and today I adapted the jig to extend the range of strings it could make.  This is undoubtedly not a new idea, probably old hat to the more experienced, but I hadn't seen anything on it. I did a pic page on my web site to show what I did.  It's pretty simple but I thought it might be helpful to anyone new to string building or hitting the same problem,i.e. making a very short string.  Here's the link to my page.  It also shows how I set up a jig for use:

Your bench dogs are a great Idea. Never thought about that.

Cap'n, you are one of those guys that's everybody's favorite Uncle!!

Thanks for all you share with us. Your joy and creativity are contagious!

I don't use a jig. I learned from fellas who use a loop at the top and and a bowyers knot for the bottom. Just another method.

I'd be willing to try a jig, though.
