need help fixing propellar twist in stave

Have a 66" hackberry stave that has propellar twist in both limbs.  Have used heat to straighten or reflex limbs but no experiance with straightening twist. How do you go about it?

I used a 24" quick grip clamp for this now but...

Clamp the handle in a vise, clamp some pieces of 2X4 or something to the end (I padded mine with carpet chunks). Leave the 2X4's longer on one side of the limb so you can apply torque. Heat the limb and torque it over a tiny bit past straight and lash your "limb wrench" in place until it cools. (One of those friction type tie down straps works good) It may take 2 or 3 trys. I've even seen guys use a big crescent wrench and protect the limb with some padding also.

I use the "big crescent wrench" technique that Tom eludes to. It works fine also.

I've done as Tom and Gordon did but you don't need to remove the twist to get a shooter. Check out Jawge's site. He has one on there that has lots of twist. You can tiller the twist out.   Pat

Thanks for the tips.  I have to trim stave down closer to floor tillering deminsions and I'll give it a try.  Do you guys use grease and flame or do you use the heat gun technique.  I've messed around with the heat gun method without much luck.  Generally use flame but have to be careful of scorching.

I use a heat gun and olive oil(any oil will work) but have never worked with hackberry. The oil will prevent scorching, aid in holding the heat longer and help distribute the heat over the area to be worked.      Pat

I like to use a large cresent with a weight on it, that way as you heat you watch the wrench when you see it dropping you know you are removing the twist. When you have enough removed, stop heating and let'r cool.
