Heat Box Build Along
« on: March 24, 2007, 09:39:00 AM »
I made a heat box for curing bows which have been glued up. It is 18 x 18 x 75 inches long and I made it so I can take it apart for easy storage. I used two 4 x 8 sheets of 1/2 inch osb, one 1 x 10 x 8 foot pine board, four little latches for the top corners, and three 200 watt bulbs. On the bottom section I glued and screwed 2 inch high boards to make a channel for my 1/2 inch osb to slide down into. I made this a very snug fit and planed the top inside edge of the 2  inch high board to make it easier to start the osb down into. These channels hold the sides and ends very snug. On the top four corners I attached cabinit latches to secure the top. I just lay the top cover on it. The three 200 watt bulbs holds a steady 140 degrees. One more 200 watt bulb would push it too 160 I would guess.

Roy, What will you be using to support the bows and how will that be attached?

I use C clamps to clamp up my bows and the bow just sits inside the box and I lean it up againist the side. I lean the bow on one side and slide the track with the three bulbs on over to the other side. The box is 18 inches wide so I have plenty of room to keep the bulbs away from the side of the box and away from the bow.

That is cool. You could place two more tracks, one at either end, and then use another piece of plywood cut in a horse shoe shape that slides in place to lay the bow on. The bow would be positioned over the lamps and the cut out provice clearance for the lamps under it.

I really like this design because I would be able to store something like this and already hace the material to build it.

Thanks!

I was contemplating things on the way home from an unsuccessful turkey hunt this morning.  Some temperatures in these hot boxes are getting pretty high - if you could add a couple of extra bulbs and few wood chips, you could have a combo limb cooker and sausage smoker!

The T/D hot box - good idea!  Steve

One thing I added to mine, I drilled a small hole and stuck in a meat thermometer so I could monitor temp.

I insulated my box with cheap foam insulation. I can use 60 watt bulbs and barely have them glowing with a dimmer switch and hold 125 degrees.

Before I added the insulation I had to run 100W bulbs wide open to hold the same temp.
