problem with HS speaker
« on: May 28, 2009, 08:54:00 AM »
My daughter came home upset yesterday, her nursing class had a vegan come in and showed a video on slaughter house cruelty, now I work at this high school and know this teacher well,I approached her today an asked about the PETA person she had as a speaker, her reply was "she really wasn't a PETA member, just an animal rights activist" (like there's a difference).I suggested that maybe the class can watch a hunting video as equal billing, she didn't like that. Now my question is, are there video's out there that portrays the value an importance of hunting without the the kill shots? I would like equal billing on this,I don't think any activism belongs in HS,but they started it. Thanks Bill

Contact the Wensel brothers. They have a version for schools now I believe.

What part in a "nursing" curriculum did this individual play?  When I was teaching, both at the high school and University level, I never had to get my speakers approved.  I'd begin looking at what purpose this speaker served, and lodge a formal complaint with the school board.  If your daughter was upset by this controversy, it would seem to me that the teacher is creating a hostile classroom where none should exist.  If you have an "activist" teacher, you don't what equal time, you want him dismissed or censured.  Best of luck!

I second Angus. I'd go full bore against this horse s**t. I had teachers and professors like this. It gets worse in college, and worse still in grad school.

MAKE NO MISTAKE, THEY ARE VERRRRRY INFLUENCIAL. IT IS OUR DUTY AND OBLIGATION TO FIGHT THIS STUFF.

Gentlemen and Ladies -

As a former science teacher I counsel patience and grace.  I am aslo the parent of three with one still in public school.  I have plenty of similar stories.  Again Patience and Grace.

Complaints to the Principal and School Board will quickly be blown out of proportion.  Rather - because teachers are always looking for outside speakers, I believe an offer of a presentation about the positives of hunting (nutrition, exercise, etc.) with plenty of time for student interaction and questions would go much farther to address this inequality.

I would see if the teacher would be willing to show primal dreams.

The first thing I would do is ask someone in administration if watching slaughter house footage is appropriate material.

Above all, be calm.  If your opponent has taken an emotional position (that's what veganism is), you must counter with logic and reason.

I gotta second VA on this one. if the vegan was discussing corporate farming practices. one can make the same arguements (over use of antibiotics, preservatives, confinement of animals etc) from a hunting perspective. i have know a few vegans that simply didnot eat factory farmed animals that have absolutely no problem with responsible hunting.

What about "Full Circle"?  It shows the historical side of hunting, with buckskin clothing, self bows, etc.

You can also stress bird watching, plant identification, serenity in nature, self sufficiency, etc.

Thanks for the info,I'll be checking out these videos,I think I may be able to have the Right kind of video shown, I don't want to make to big of deal about this since me & my wife both work for the school system, but it pi*** me off,no one likes seeing that kind of footage but to have an activist as a guest speaker is wrong and I'm not sure what that has to do with nursing other than maybe nutritional stuff from a vegan. That seems to be all this teacher wants to do is have guest speakers.

Teachers, pushing personal political agendas in public schools where the students are not even of voteing age is absolutely wrong. We had the same type issue, with our sons 4th grade teacher.I filed a formal complaint with the priciple and vice principle.I was prepared to go higher if needed, but turned out,i didnt need to.Both the principle and vice, are hunters and that teacher was gone, the next year.I have no tolerance, for teachers in public school system pushing any kind of political agendas PERIOD!!!!!

I am retired after 30 years of teaching.  During my tenure, we organized the first high bowhunting club in the state, and bowhunter certified (IBEP) hundreds of students (and their parents).  Recently I helped introduce the film "Primal Dreams" into the agriculture curriculum and the student anti-drug organizations.  Finally, we placed copies of the "Condensed Version" of "Primal Dreams in ever school library.  The film has been very well received.

Tradbow,

Show this to your daughter's class.  Another on of us "bad hunters" doing the right thing when no one else is watching (and banged up to boot).  The true definition of character!!

Did this video show hunting in a bad way or slaughter houses?  I agree that is rediculous to show children and should not be aloud.  I agree with mwmwmb they can talk about the antibiotics and preservitives and such for possible health reasons but to show animals being slaughterd is inapropriate, off subject and should not be shown.  I don't understand Vegans, we have been eating meat since forever to not would in my opinion be an experiment with my own body.  God would have told us in our manual if we were not supposed to eat it.
