Tuning A New Batch Of Carbon Shafts

Any recommendations on an efficient way to ensure a new batch of carbon shafts are tuned to equivalency with an existing batch?

I'm new to carbons; been using the bare shaft planning method described by O.L. Adcock to settle on an optimal carbon shaft (Carbon Express Heritage 150s with 415gr - BH, steel adaptor, brass insertup - up front).

From what I've seen, carbons are considerably more variable than aluminums.  With aluminums, I'd just cut a new batch of shafts to the same length as a prior batch.

Is it best to compare bare shaft planning to fletched shafts for the new batch, or is that going overboard?

They are no more variable that aluminum.If you are already shooting those same arrows just make the next batch the same and they work.

I'm with James on this. I haven't seen any difference one dozen to the next. Now maybe that isn't the case with ALL carbons, I don't know. But the ones I buy have been right on the money time and time again.

I gotta disagree with everyone above....some shafts from the same companies vary greatly in weight and more importantly spine and will shoot different!

But....that said, some companies arrows are better than others and will be very well matched from batch to batch....

I weigh and spine test every carbon arrow I get...sometimes I'm surprised how well matched they are, sometimes I'm blown away by how bad they are!

I am weight and spine test mine too Guru. I am always wanting to double check what I am getting...whether it's wood or carbon. Good advice there.  No surprises yet!

I'm on my fourth dozen CX heritage...and I couldn't tell you which arrows are from the first dozen.  I don't find any detectable variation.

What range of weight and spine do you consider acceptable - beyond which you reject a shaft?

Like you and Snag, I've been measuring weight and spine on each shaft, then comparing to specs and each other (purchased a few test batches of 150's, 250's and 350's before settling on 150's).

I must say that the weight has been varying to a greater extent on the 150's relative to what's advertised (10% heavier). The spines have been more tightly controlled, which I guess is a good thing, since at hunting distances I'm guessing that a 10% weight variations won't pose much of a problem, though can't say for sure - guess I'm spoiled since the aluminums I've used and measured have been more tightly controlled for both spine and weight.

I'm with guru on this one Although I DONT SPINE TEST I do weigh every arrow and mark them, I had a 10 gr variance from 3 dozen GT's from the same batch, which means to me....If the weight is off that much then the Spine HAS TO BE DIFFERENT...
However, I dont notice MUCH flight difference..

Dave, I shoot the CE Heritage 250s. I find them to be very consistant in weight and spine. But off the top of my head I can't say what the weight range is. I'll check them this weekend and post my findings if you'd like..? What weights are you getting on the 150s? Are they exactly the same length? Do you weigh them before adding glue and inserts and fletching them?

A comparison could be informative.  Here's thee numbers I'm getting right out of the box, uncut (32.5") - no flectching, no nocks, no points.  
I also measure upon completion, but bare shaft numbers sort of tell ya how limited you'll be  with shaft-to-shaft consistency, w/o any compensation.  

My measurements directly below - spec targets from manufacturer shown below that.
