New Mexico has no over the counter deer tags. In order to hunt his ranch, you can either put in for the draw for which ever unit his ranch is in, or you will need to get a landowner's tag from him.

THe draw results are coming up in a few weeks for the 2009 season.  Tell your client to put in for landowner tags and then ask if you can buy one.  You would have to wait until the 2010 season though.

What unit is your client's ranch in?  On rare occasions for certain units extra tags have been sold on first come first serve basis.  You better have a fast internet connection and be online the second they open up the sale for these tags

I checked the units and it is 32 and 33, there is also some population of barbary sheep in the ranch, is this for a draw basis also?

thank you for all your help, each state is a whole lot different

You can buy a landowner tag anytime up until the hunt date if available.

I don't know the answer to your question; but I did find the folks at NMF&G to be very service oriented. I too had some questions and they got back to me surprisingly fast and were very helpful.

Although I have never purchased one, that is my understanding of the process.  The landowner applies for and receives the tag, and then he/she can sell it to whomever they want.  You would still need to buy the license in addition to having the tag.
Don't take my word for it though, check with NMG&F.
